AI Article Synopsis

  • Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of health issues globally, especially worsened by obesity, prompting a review of semaglutide, a new weight management drug.
  • The FDA approved semaglutide on June 4, 2021, for adults with obesity or overweight who have related conditions, marking it as the first such drug approved since 2014.
  • Semaglutide is designed to be used alongside a diet and exercise program for effective weight management in individuals with a BMI of 27 or higher or those with a BMI of 30 or higher.

Article Abstract

Purpose Of Review: Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the risk is heightened in the presence of obesity. We review semaglutide, a drug recently approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or who are overweight.

Recent Findings: On 4 June 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration approved semaglutide injection at 2.4 mg once weekly for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes mellitus, or high cholesterol. This subcutaneous injection is the first approved drug for chronic weight management in adults with general obesity or overweight since 2014. The drug is indicated for weight management in patients with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater who have at least one weight-related ailment or in patients with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater.

Summary: Semaglutide offers adults with obesity or overweight a new treatment in conjunction with a weight management program consisting of reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with cognitive impairments which are linked to a deficit in cholinergic function. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of TeMac™ to prevent memory impairment in scopolamine-rats model of Alzheimer's disease and by in silico approaches to identify molecules in TeMac™ inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. The cholinergic cognitive dysfunction was induced by intraperitoneal injection of scopolamine (1 mg/kg daily) in male Wistar rats for seven consecutive days.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Narrative review of the author's main contributions to the field of cardiovascular health spanning four decades, with a focus on findings related to 1- the pathophysiology of obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and 2- the management/prevention of these conditions. Particular attention is given to the importance of regular physical activity. RECENT FINDINGS: Because behaviors and their physiological consequences are still not measured in clinical practice, it is proposed to systematically assess and target "lifestyle vital signs" (waist circumference, cardiorespiratory fitness, food-based diet quality and level of leisure-time physical activity) in primary care.

Department of Otolaryngology, Robert Debre Hospital, Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP) and Paris University, 48, Boulevard Sérurier, 75019, Paris, France.

Objectives: This study aimed to identify factors predicting postoperative ICU admission, the need for orotracheal intubation (OTI), and the occurrence of supraglottic stenosis in children undergoing supraglottoplasty for laryngomalacia.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 31 children (Dear Reviewer, we would have greatly preferred to include a larger sample size. However, as you know, this type of management is rare, and we deliberately selected a 7-year period to ensure a minimum of 30 children while avoiding significant differences in management guidelines over time.
