Urine is one of the biological matrices most used for detecting human contamination, as it is representative and easily obtained via noninvasive sampling. This study proposes a fast, accurate, and ecological method based on liquid-liquid microextraction with low-temperature partition (μLLE/LTP). It was validated to determine nine pesticides (lindane, alachlor, aldrin, chlorpyrifos, dieldrin, endrin, DDT, bifenthrin, and permethrin) in human urine, in association with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The technique was optimized through a factorial design. The best conditions for the simultaneous extraction of the analytes comprised the addition of 600 µL of water and 600 µL of acetonitrile (extracting solvent) to a 500-µL urine sample, followed by vortexing for 60 s. By freezing the samples for 4 h, it was possible to extract the pesticides and perform the extract clean-up simultaneously. The parameters selectivity, linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), precision, and accuracy were used to appraise the performance of the method. Good values of selectivity and linearity ( > 0.990), LOQ (0.39-1.02 μg L), accuracy (88-119% recovery), and precision (%CV ≤ 15%) were obtained. The μLLE/LTP-GC-MS method was applied to authentic urine samples collected from volunteers in Southeast Brazil.

Evaluation of fatigue performance of asphalt materials based on their relaxation behavior.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Shanxi Province Land Engineering Construction Group Co., Ltd, Xian, 710075, China.

Although the fatigue properties of asphalt materials have been extensively studied, the relationship between the rheological properties and road performance of asphalt mixtures remains underexplored. In this study, we have examined the relaxation properties of asphalt binders through relaxation tests conducted on asphalt and its mastic under different conditions. A repeated stress relaxation-recovery test is designed for assessing both the relaxation and elastic properties, and a set of reasonable test parameters is recommended, thereby establishing a novel test method for measuring the relaxation and elastic behaviors of asphalt.

Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) represents a valid option for adjuvant therapy of selected early breast cancer (BC). This single-institution prospective randomized study compares the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) between women treated with the highly conformal-external beam APBI technique and those with the more commonly used moderately hypofractionated whole breast irradiation (hypo-WBI). Eligible patients were women over 50 years with early BC (G1/2 DCIS ≤ 25 mm or G1/2 invasive non-lobular luminal-like HER2 negative carcinoma ≤ 20 mm) after breast-conserving surgery with negative margins.

Classical genomic prediction approaches rely on statistical associations between traits and markers rather than their biological significance. Biologically informed selection of genomic regions can help prioritize polymorphisms by considering underlying biological processes, making prediction models robust and accurate. Gene ontology (GO) terms can be used for this purpose, and the information can be integrated into genomic prediction models through marker categorization.

A simple, fast, and cost-effective colorimetric nitrite (NO) sensor based on ZIF-67-derived CoO nanocomposite (ZCo-2 NC) structure has been developed. The prepared colorimetric sensor (ZCo-2 NC) was employed to sensitively detect NO in drinking water system by the exhibition of promising peroxidase-mimicking nanozyme-like features. The sensor manifest well-determined sensing response with excellent linear and wide range of NO sensitivity (0.

Coffee pulp (CP) is the by-product of coffee processing that urgently needs to be revalorized using sustainable technologies. This work applied a design of experiment (DoE) for modeling the extraction of bioactive compounds from CP using supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO) with ethanol as a co-solvent under variable conditions (temperature, pressure, and ethanol percentage). Considering extraction efficiency (per unit of CP) and extraction selectivity (per unit of extract), results showed that ethanol percentage significantly enhanced the efficiency of total phenolic content, as well as the selectivity of chlorogenic acid and protocatechuic acid (p < 0.
