The blennies, (Chaenopsidae) and (Tripterygiidae) are representative members of two families spanning the deepest node of the Blennioidei tree. The mitogenomes of 16,507 bp for and 16,529 bp for each consisted of 37 genes and one control loop region. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the placement of Chaenopsidae and Tripterygiidae within the Blenniiformes, however, there was instability in the placement of the triplefins between reconstruction methods, likely due to low taxon sampling. These mitogenomes represent an important milestone in uncovering relationships within Blenniiformes and Ovalentaria.

Phylogeny and biogeography of a shallow water fish clade (Teleostei: Blenniiformes).

BMC Evol Biol

September 2013

Marine Biology Research Division, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093, USA.

Background: The Blenniiformes comprises six families, 151 genera and nearly 900 species of small teleost fishes closely associated with coastal benthic habitats. They provide an unparalleled opportunity for studying marine biogeography because they include the globally distributed families Tripterygiidae (triplefin blennies) and Blenniidae (combtooth blennies), the temperate Clinidae (kelp blennies), and three largely Neotropical families (Labrisomidae, Chaenopsidae, and Dactyloscopidae). However, interpretation of these distributional patterns has been hindered by largely unresolved inter-familial relationships and the lack of evidence of monophyly of the Labrisomidae.

[Cryptobenthic coral reef fishes in Los Roques National Park, Caribbean of Venezuela].

Rev Biol Trop

March 2010

Departamento de Biología, Facultad de Ciencias y Tecnología, Universidad de Carabobo, Valencia.

A significant portion of coral reef fish assemblages are composed of small cryptobenthic fishes, but these are poorly represented in regional fish characterization works. We characterized the cryptobenthic reef fish community associated with coral reef in Los Roques National Park during six week surveys. The study included 11 locations in which these fish were registered in transects of 10 x 2 m.

In terms of species number (47) and numerical abundance, blennioids are the most important primary resident rocky reef fishes in the Gulf of California, Mexico. We present the feeding patterns of the 34 most abundant species of blennioid fishes, 8 of which are Gulf endemics. A total of 2,144 specimens were sampled at 51 anaesthetic stations in 9 areas throughout the Gulf.
