To investigate the relationship between pancreatic steatosis (PS) assessed on computed tomography (CT) and COVID-19 prognosis. This retrospective study covers 396 patients with COVID-19 (mean age: 52.50 ± 16.86 years), who underwent unenhanced chest CT. PS was compared with clinical findings, comorbidities, requirements for hospitalization, intubation and intensive care unit (ICU), length of hospitalization and death. PS was found to be strongly correlated with the severity of clinical findings and hospitalization rates (p < 0.001). In hospitalized patients, length of hospitalization (p = 0.002) and rates of ICU requirement (p = 0.003) were higher in patients with PS. PS, correlated with clinical severity and hospitalization requirement, is an independent risk factor for COVID-19.

Alterations in tissue expression levels of both retinol-binding protein 2 (RBP2) and retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) have been associated with metabolic disease, specifically with obesity, glucose intolerance and hepatic steatosis. Our laboratories have shown that this involves novel pathways not previously considered as possible linkages between impaired retinoid metabolism and metabolic disease development. We have established both biochemically and structurally that RBP2 binds with very high affinity to very long-chain unsaturated 2-monoacylglycerols like the canonical endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG) and other endocannabinoid-like substances.

Urinary stones (urolithiasis) have been categorized as kidney stones (renal calculus), ureteric stones (ureteral calculus and ureterolith), bladder stones (bladder calculus), and urethral stones (urethral calculus); however, the mechanisms underlying their promotion and related injuries in glomerular and tubular cells remain unclear. Lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), a crucial enzyme in lipid metabolism, plays important yet poorly understood roles in tumours, especially in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study, our investigation revealed that LCAT is a key downregulated metabolic gene and an independent risk factor for poor prognosis in patients with HCC. Functional experiments showed that LCAT inhibited HCC cell proliferation, migration and invasion.
