Article Abstract

Skin contact with phytotoxic chemicals present in and UV light exposure might cause a nonallergic contact dermatitis known as phytophotodermatitis. We present a major burns case report associated with the use of rue (an herb used in Colombia for cultural beliefs) before entering a tanning bed. The patient presented superficial wounds that evolved to deeper ones in a phytophotodermatitis reaction that acted as a chemical burn. The patient presented an estimated percentage of total burn surface area of 85% with second-degree burns. It took two and a half months to apply multiple debridements and bandage coverage before discharge. One month later, the patient presented a dark purplish pigmentation mainly in the lower limbs. Since ancient times, rue has been used as part of medical pharmacy, insecticidal activities, and for superstitious purposes. In many countries, rue is used as part of an elixir that helps with bad luck, envy, and anguish, and the risks associated with those uses are unknown. This is a critical and alarming public health problem. Awareness of possible complications that could develop after rue and tanning beds should encourage patients and physicians to prevent and treat this dangerous combination.

Open abdomen treatment (OAT) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In cases where primary or delayed fascial closure cannot be achieved, vacuum-assisted wound closure and mesh-mediated fascial traction are indicated, which often result in a planned ventral hernia. If secondary skin closure is not feasible, common treatment of granulated abdominal defects involves split-thickness skin-grafting or healing by secondary intention leading to significant scarring and sometimes mutilating defects.

Background: The percentage of Portuguese psoriasis patients with psoriatic arthritis is unknown but musculoskeletal complaints related to PsA affect up to a third of patients. Dermatologists can identify early PsA as skin symptoms often precede joint symptoms in 80% of patients. Efficient and easy to perform screening tools are needed to help dermatologists effectively discriminate between Pso and PsA patients.

Introduction: The burden of severe asthma on patients, especially on those with concomitant chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), is substantial. Treatment intensification with oral corticosteroids is a common strategy for managing severe asthma exacerbations; however, prolonged exposure to systemic corticosteroids is associated with multisystem toxicity. This study aimed to quantify the association between oral corticosteroid use and annual asthma-related costs in patients with severe asthma with or without CRSwNP.

Purpose Of Review: The present investigation assesses efficacy of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on relief of cancer or chemotherapy-related pain. Patients with cancer experience a relatively high prevalence of pain that is reportedly undertreated. Therefore, this analysis is pertinent to determine if TENS is a useful complementary therapy considering its increase in accessibility and minimal side effect profile.
