The purpose of this manuscript is to report our experience in the 2021 SIIM Virtual Hackathon, where we developed a proof-of-concept of a radiology training module with elements of gamification. In the 50 h allotted in the hackathon, we proposed an idea, connected with colleagues from five different countries, and completed an operational proof-of-concept, which was demonstrated live at the hackathon showcase, competing with eight other teams. Our prototype involved participants annotating publicly available chest radiographs of patients with tuberculosis. We showed how we could give experience points to trainees based on annotation precision compared to ground truth radiologists' annotation, ranked in a live leaderboard. We believe that gamification elements could provide an engaging solution for radiology education. Our project was awarded first place out of eight participating hackathon teams.

Simultaneous Concentration and T Mapping of Brain Metabolites by Fast Multi-Echo Spectroscopic Imaging.

NMR Biomed

February 2025

MR Methodology, Department for Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland.

The purpose of this study was to produce metabolite-specific T and concentration maps in a clinically compatible time frame. A multi-TE 2D MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) experiment (multi-echo single-shot MRSI [MESS-MRSI]) deployed truncated and partially sampled multi-echo trains from single scans and was combined with simultaneous multiparametric model fitting. It was tested in vivo for the brain in five healthy subjects.

Purpose Of The Study: Open (incisional) biopsies have long been accepted as the gold standard in diagnosing bone and soft tissue tumors. However, the main disadvantage of this method is that it can lead to increased contamination, hematoma, infection, and pathological fracture. Compared to open biopsies, percutaneous core needle biopsies are less invasive, do not require hospitalization, have low costs and low complication rates, and there is no need for wound healing in cases that require radiotherapy.

Due to much of medical training being inpatient centered, medical trainees generally do more pre-rounding on a per-patient basis than they do complete histories and physical exams (H&Ps). However, formal training often overlooks pre-rounding as a critical aspect of medical education and patient care, with at least 10 times more publications on H&Ps than on any other aspect of rounding over the past half-century. To address this critical gap in medical education, we introduce the "Lesss PAINFUL" pre-rounding mnemonic, emphasizing the importance of efficient pre-rounding for medical students or other trainees.

Enhanced diagnosis of pes planus and pes cavus using deep learning-based segmentation of weight-bearing lateral foot radiographs: a comparative observer study.

Biomed Eng Lett

January 2025

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Asan Medical Institute of Convergence Science and Technology, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Unlabelled: A weight-bearing lateral radiograph (WBLR) of the foot is a gold standard for diagnosing adult-acquired flatfoot deformity. However, it is difficult to measure the major axis of bones in WBLR without using auxiliary lines. Herein, we develop semantic segmentation with a deep learning model (DLm) on the WBLR of the foot for enhanced diagnosis of pes planus and pes cavus.

Insomnia is a common mental illness seriously affecting people lives, that might progress to major depression. However, the neural mechanism of patients with CID comorbid MDD remain unclear. Combining fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and seed-based functional connectivity (FC), this study investigated abnormality in local and long-range neural activity of patients with CID comorbid MDD.
