There is accumulating evidence about an association between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and psychiatric disorders. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of previous psychiatric disorders before ALS onset and evaluate the contribution of psychiatric disorders to the number of steps toward developing ALS. We analyzed the National Health Insurance claims data from 2011 to 2017 and calculated the incidence of ALS. We created a multistep model using the linear least squares method with regression of the log incidence against the log age. The mean annual incidence of ALS was 0.95/100,000 and frequency of familial ALS (fALS) was 5.89%. The proportions of patients who had psychiatric disorders before ALS diagnosis were 36.8% and 47.0% in fALS and sporadic ALS (sALS), respectively ( = 0.009). In both fALS and sALS, depressive disorders and anxiety and stress disorders were relatively frequent, whereas psychotic disorders and bipolar disorders were rare. Further, the slope estimates for regression analyses were 3.50 (R = 0.94) and 3.56 (R = 0.99) for fALS and sALS, respectively, suggesting a 4-5-step process to ALS onset. However, slope estimates did not differ between sALS patients with psychiatric disorders and those without. The incidence of ALS is relatively low in Korea and fewer steps are required to develop ALS compared to Western populations (all 6 steps). Although the prevalence of previous depression or anxiety is seemingly high, the multistep model provides no evidence that these conditions modify the risk of developing ALS in our cohort.

Background: Brain stimulation therapy (BST) has significant potential in treating psychiatric, movement, and cognitive disorders. Given the high prevalence of comorbidities among these disorders, we conducted an umbrella review to comprehensively assess the efficacy of BSTs in treating the core symptoms across these three categories of disorders.

Methods: We systematically searched for meta-analyses and network meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials with sham controls up to September 25, 2024, from databases including PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and the Cochrane Library.

Background & Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been increasingly recognized as a comorbidity in many psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder (BD). This study aimed to synthesize existing evidence to determine the frequency of OSA in patients diagnosed with BD and identify potential predictors of its occurrence.

Methods: PubMed, Scopus, CENTRAL (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), and Google Scholar databases were searched for English-language papers published up from 1 January 1960 to 31 October 2023 that reported incidences of OSA in patients with BP and provided sufficient data for quantitative analysis.

Evidence suggests that attenuated mismatch negative (MMN) waves have a close link to auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) and their clinical outcomes, especially impaired neural oscillations such as θ, β representing attentional control. In current study, thirty patients with schizophrenia and AVH (SZ) and twenty-nine healthy controls (HC) underwent multi-feature MMN paradigm measurements including frequency and duration deviant stimuli (fMMN and dMMN). Clinical symptoms and MMN paradigm were followed up among SZ group after 8-week treatment.

Background: In the past few decades, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) became widely used antidepressants worldwide. Therefore, the adverse reactions of patients after SSRI administration became a public and clinical concern. In this study, we conducted a pharmacovigilance study using the Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database of the US Food and Drug Administration.
