A widely disseminated native species from Australia, , which is mainly cultivated in Brazil and South Africa, represents a rich source of natural tannins used in the tanning process. Many flowers of the species are used as sources of compounds of interest for the cosmetic industry, such as phenolic compounds. In this study, supercritical fluid extraction was used to obtain non-volatile compounds from flowers for the first time. The extract showed antimicrobial activity and the presence of -anisic acid, a substance with industrial and pharmaceutical applications. The fractionation of the extract was performed using a chromatographic column and the fraction containing -anisic acid presented better minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) results than the crude extract. Thus, the extraction process was optimized to maximize the -anisic acid extraction. The response surface methodology and the Box-Behnken design was used to evaluate the pressure, temperature, the cosolvent, and the influence of the particle size on the extraction process. After the optimization process, the -anisic acid yield was 2.51% / and the extraction curve was plotted as a function of time. The simulation of the extraction process was performed using the three models available in the literature.

This study aimed to unraveling the color evolution and metabolic pathways of pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside (P3G) during lactic acid fermentation of the strawberry juice color simulation system. The results revealed that fermentation with both Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus acidophilus caused a decline in pH of the strawberry juice color simulation system and significantly accelerated the decrease in P3G content. The CIELAB space model pointed out that parameters a and b of the group treated with both lactic acid bacteria and P3G initially increased to a peak level and then gradually decreased, shifting the overall color towards orange and then gradually fading.

The present study aims to investigate the current trends in replacing conventional preservatives with multifunctional ingredients with antimicrobial properties for preservation of cosmetics for infants or sensitive population, to decrease their potential for contact dermatitis. We first reviewed the labels of cosmetics purchased from the Chinese market for conventional preservatives and multifunctional ingredients with antimicrobial properties, of which the actual contents were further quantified by chromatographic methods. We identified 7 traditional preservatives (phenoxyethanol, benzoic acid (salts), methylparaben, benzyl alcohol, sorbic acid (salts), propylparaben, and methylisothiazolinone), and 11 alternative ingredients with antimicrobial activities (ethylhexylglycerin, butylene glycol, caprylyl glycol, propylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, p-anisic acid, hydroxyacetophenone, pentylene glycol, decylene glycol, caprylhydroxamic acid, and aminomethyl propanol) in descending order of prevalence.

The recovery of bioactive compounds is a promising approach for obtaining rich extracts from fruit by-products. This study investigated the influence of Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) and Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE) on the phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, and in vitro antidiabetic activity of Psidium myrtoides by-product. Among eight NADES evaluated based on choline chloride, NADES ChCl:Gly (1:2) was selected for its efficiency in extracting total phenolic compounds (TPC) with high antioxidant capacity.

Machine learning-aided engineering of a cytochrome P450 for optimal bioconversion of lignin fragments.

Using machine learning, molecular dynamics simulations, and density functional theory calculations we gain insight into the selectivity patterns of substrate activation by the cytochromes P450. In nature, the reactions catalyzed by the P450s lead to the biodegradation of xenobiotics, but recent work has shown that fungi utilize P450s for the activation of lignin fragments, such as monomer and dimer units. These fragments often are the building blocks of valuable materials, including drug molecules and fragrances, hence a highly selective biocatalyst that can produce these compounds in good yield with high selectivity would be an important step in biotechnology.
