includes a large number of cultivars that are further distinguished in biotypes and clones, and it is actually hard to differentiate them, even through complex molecular techniques. In this work, the plant materials of 56 putative Sangiovese and 14 putative Montepulciano biotypes, two of the most widespread black-berried Italian cultivars, were collected in different wine-growing areas of Italy distributed in 13 regions, from north to south. Firstly, the samples were analyzed using SSR markers to have proper varietal identification. According to the results, the genotypes belonged to three different cultivars: Sangiovese, Sanforte, and Montepulciano. Subsequently, the samples were investigated using AFLP, SAMPL, M-AFLP, and I-SSR molecular markers to estimate their intra-varietal genetic variability. The DNA marker-based method used turned out to be performing to bring out the geographic differences among the biotypes screened, and it can therefore be considered as a powerful tool available for all the grapevine varieties.

Despite the precise environmental manipulation enabled by controlled environment agriculture (CEA), plant genotype remains a key factor in producing desirable traits. Brassica rapa var. nipposinica (mizuna) is a leading candidate for supplementing deficiencies in the space diet, however, which cultivar of mizuna will respond best to the environment of the international space station (ISS) is unknown.

The criteria of "Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability" as well as a high "overall quality index" are used to register the Italian modern varieties to the national register. Differently, local conservation varieties can be certified under different EU Directives that facilitate, as an overall objective, the preservation of biodiversity and the containment of genetic erosion. In recent years, products derived from ancient grains are perceived to be healthier and more sustainable by consumers, especially in Italy, with consequent higher market prices.

Article Synopsis
  • Sexual reproduction and spontaneous somatic mutations have led to significant diversity in cultivated grapevine populations, showcasing the importance of natural selections, or "clones," for potential traits that improve grape quality and resilience.
  • This study examines the genetic diversity and structure of 138 grapevine clones from six varieties, utilizing SNP markers to analyze genetic similarities, especially among geographically related populations.
  • Findings highlight around two hundred divergent genetic loci linked to critical traits, emphasizing the need to preserve these traditional grapevines for future breeding and cultivation advancements.

Intra-Varietal Diversity and Its Contribution to Wheat Evolution, Domestication, and Improvement in Wheat.

Crop genetic diversity is essential for adaptation and productivity in agriculture. A previous study revealed that poor allele diversity in wheat commercial cultivars is a major barrier to its further improvement. Homologs within a variety, including paralogs and orthologs in polyploid, account for a large part of the total genes of a species.
