Carbonate rock strengthening using chemical techniques is a strategy to prevent excessive fines migration during oil and gas production. We provide herein a study of the adsorption of three types of hydrolysed polyacrylamide (HPAM) of different molecular weight (F3330S, 11-13 MDa; F3530 S, 15-17 MDa; F3630S, 18-20 MDa) onto calcium carbonate (CaCO) particles via spectrophotometry using a Shimadzu UV-2600 spectrometer. The results are compared to different adsorption isotherms and kinetic models. The Langmuir isotherm shows the highest correlation coefficient (R > 0.97) with equilibrium parameters () ranging between 0 and 1 for all three HPAMs, suggesting a favorable monolayer adsorption of HPAM onto CaCO. The adsorption follows pseudo-second order kinetics, indicating that the interaction of HPAM with CaCO is largely dependent on the adsorbate concentration. An adsorption plot reveals that the amount of HPAM adsorbed onto CaCO at equilibrium increases with higher polymer molecular weight; the equilibrium adsorbed values for F3330S, F3530S and F3630S are approximately 0.24 mg/m, 0.31 mg/m, and 0.43 mg/m, respectively. Zeta potential analysis shows that CaCO has a zeta potential of +12.32 mV, which transitions into negative values upon introducing HPAM. The point of zero charge (PZC) is observed at HPAM dosage between 10 to 30 ppm, in which the pH here lies between 9-10.

High-Performance Triple-Network Hydrogels Derived from Chrome Leather Scraps: Ultrahigh Compressive Strength, Adhesion, and Self-Recovery.

Biomacromolecules

College of Bioresources Chemical and Materials Engineering (College of Flexible Electronics), Shaanxi University of Science & Technology, Xi'an 710021, China.

The development of engineered hydrogels with high strength, self-recovery, and adhesion is essential for applications requiring resistance to large deformations and cyclic loading. Herein, a triple-network (TN) hydrogel with ultrahigh compressive strength, strong adhesion, and good self-recovery was constructed by using tannic acid-modified chrome leather scrap hydrolysate as the first network, polyacrylamide as the second network, and poly-2-propenamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid as the third network. The ultrahigh (70 MPa compressive strength and 95% compression deformation) TN hydrogels were effectively created, which is attributed to the synergy of the three networks.

Influence of protein in low paste viscosities of Bambara groundnut flours from heat-treated Bambara groundnut seeds.

Department of Consumer and Food Sciences, University of Pretoria, Private Bag X20, Hatfield, Pretoria 0028, South Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • Heat treatment of Bambara groundnut seeds lowers the paste viscosities of resulting flours by causing structural changes in the protein that encapsulate starch.
  • Trypsin hydrolysis of these proteins leads to the visible separation of starch granules and significantly increases paste viscosities from 733.9 mPa s to 2081.71 mPa s.
  • The study also finds that combined microwave and infrared heating alters the protein's secondary structures, increasing β-sheet content while decreasing α-helix, impacting the flour's overall properties.

Background: Chicken feathers contribute to large quantities of keratinaceous wastes that pose serious environmental problems and must be catered to properly. Chicken feathers are also a potential source of vital proteins, peptides, and amino acids, which could be used as low-cost animal feeds. Therefore, there has been increasing interest in keratinase-producing microbes for reprocessing and using keratinous biomaterials.

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is utilized in the oil and gas production industry to extract additional oil from underground reservoirs. In chemically enhanced oil recovery, surfactant and polymeric water are injected separately or in a mixture. Injected fluids can form stable emulsions during oil production.
