In this work, gamma-ray shielding features of crosslinked polystyrene-b-polyethyleneglycol block copolymers (PS-b-PEG) blended with nanostructured selenium dioxide (SeO) and boron nitride (BN) particles were studied. This research details several radiation shielding factors i.e., mass attenuation coefficient (μm), linear attenuation coefficient (μL), radiation protection efficiency (RPE), half-value layer (HVL), tenth-value layer (TVL), and mean free path (MFP). The irradiation properties of our nanocomposites were investigated with rays from the Eu source (in the energy intervals from 121.780 keV to 1408.010 keV) in a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector system, and analyzed with GammaVision software. Moreover, all radiation shielding factors were determined by theoretical calculus and compared with the experimental results. In addition, the morphological and thermal characterization of all nanocomposites was surveyed with various techniques i.e., nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Acceptable compatibility was revealed and observed in all nanocomposites between the experimental and theoretical results. The PS-b-PEG copolymer and nanostructured SeO and BN particles exerted a significant effect in enhancing the resistance of the nanocomposites, and the samples with high additive rates exhibited better resistance than the other nanocomposites. From the achieved outcomes, it can be deduced that our polymer-based nanocomposites can be utilized as a good choice in the gamma-irradiation-shielding discipline.

Ultra-intense short-pulse lasers interacting with matter are capable of generating exceptionally bright secondary radiation sources. The short pulse duration (picoseconds to nanoseconds), small source size (sub-mm), and comparable high peak flux to conventional single particle sources make them an attractive source for radiography using a combination of particle species, known as multimodal imaging. Simultaneous x-ray and MeV neutron imaging of multi-material objects can yield unique advantages for material segmentation and identification within the full sample.

One of the biggest challenges in food packaging is the creation of sustainable and eco-friendly packaging materials to shield foods from ultraviolet (UV) photochemical damage and to preserve the distinctive physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of foods throughout the supply chain. Accordingly, this study focuses on enhancing the UV shielding properties and biological activity of carboxylmethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) through modifications using zinc oxide (ZnO), copper oxide (CuO), and graphene oxide (GO) using the solution casting technique. Barium fluoride borosilicate glass samples reinforced with varying amounts of GdO (BSBLG0-BSBLG4) have been manufactured using the conventional melt quenching procedure in order to provide additional research on the type of borosilicate glass. Structural, physical, and linear optical characteristics as well as γ-ray attenuation capacity of barium fluoride borosilicate doped with GdO was investigated. X-ray diffraction pattern proving the amorphous nature of the glass samples due to the absence of a distinctive crystalline characteristic peak.

Multispectral camouflage materials play a vital role in sophisticated multi-band electromagnetic (EM) applications. However, conventional single-band stealth is difficult to align with the growing demand for multi-band compatibility and intelligent adaptation. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of cephalopod-inspired MXene-integrated cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (MXene-CLCEs) with multispectral camouflage capability, which was fabricated through in situ thiol-acrylate Michael addition and free-radical photopolymerization of CLCE precursor and isocyanate-mediated robust covalent chemical bonding of MXene nanocoating at the interface.
