Sir Wilfred Fish was one of dentistry's 'greats', shining clinically, in research, administration and teaching. This paper examines his story. However, there is no examination of his actual research and publications. That would require another publication. He was a chairman of the Dental Board of the UK, first president of the General Dental Council and dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. His research carried out at University College London, the Royal Dental Hospital, St Mary's Hospital and the Royal College of Surgeons of England was acclaimed worldwide. His resultant Doctor of Science degree was a rarity for a dentist. All of this was achieved while running a highly successful general dental practice. He received a host of honourary degrees and diplomas at home and abroad.
