Unconventional gas reservoirs, characterized by their complex geologies and challenging extraction conditions, demand innovative approaches to enhance gas production and ensure economic viability. Well stimulation techniques, such as hydraulic fracturing and acidizing, have become indispensable tools in unlocking the potential of these tight formations. However, the effectiveness of these techniques can vary widely depending on the specific characteristics of the reservoir.

A cost-effective adaptive repair strategy to mitigate DDoS-capable IoT botnets.

PLoS One

December 2024

School of Big Data & Software Engineering, Chongqing University, Chongqing, China.

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) is a type of cyberattack in which multiple compromised systems flood the bandwidth or resources of a single system, making the flooded system inaccessible to legitimate users. Since large-scale botnets based on the Internet of Things (IoT) have been hotbeds for launching DDoS attacks, it is crucial to defend against DDoS-capable IoT botnets effectively. In consideration of resource constraints and frequent state changes for IoT devices, they should be equipped with repair measures that are cost-effective and adaptive to mitigate the impact of DDoS attacks.

Background: Longitudinal digital health studies combine passively collected information from digital devices, such as commercial wearable devices, and actively contributed data, such as surveys, from participants. Although the use of smartphones and access to the internet supports the development of these studies, challenges exist in collecting representative data due to low adherence and retention. We aimed to identify key factors related to adherence and retention in digital health studies and develop a methodology to identify factors that are associated with and might affect study participant engagement.

Background: Clinician electronic actions within the electronic health record (EHR) are captured seamlessly in real-time during regular work activities in all major EHRs. Analysis of this EHR use metadata, such as audit log data, is increasingly used to understand the impact of work design on critical patient, workforce, and organizational outcomes.

Objective: Understand experiences and perspectives influencing the use and implementation of audit log data into practice.

Effectively addressing ethical issues in precision medicine research in Africa requires a holistic social contract that integrates biomedical knowledge with local cultural values and Indigenous knowledge systems. Drawing on African epistemologies such as ubuntu and ujamaa and on our collective experiences in genomics and big data research for sickle cell disease, hearing impairment, and fragile X syndrome and the project Public Understanding of Big Data in Genomics Medicine in Africa, we envision a transformative shift in health research data governance in Africa that could help create a sense of shared responsibility between all stakeholders in genomics and data-driven health research in Africa. This shift includes proposing a social contract for genomics and data science in health research that is grounded in African communitarianism such as solidarity, shared decision-making, and reciprocity.
