Concern about adolescent diets, obesity, and the associated health risks have been growing in the United States. This inspired former First Lady Michelle Obama to spearhead the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA), which made changes to the national school lunch program by increasing servings of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Our study examined the variability of student carbohydrate sources throughout the day and before and after the implementation of HHFKA using a stable isotope dietary biomarker. This method uses carbon stable isotope values of exhaled CO breath (δC) and provides a quantitative, non-invasive measure. δC samples were collected throughout the day from students ( = 31) that attended a public high school in Salt Lake City, UT. δC measurements reflected the short-term carbohydrate inputs from the previous meal. Carbohydrate sources were not consistent throughout the day; most students had their lowest inputs of corn/sugar-based carbohydrates after lunch. We compared our results with an earlier study that had been conducted pre-HHFKA. After-lunch δC values decreased significantly between the two time points, suggesting an increase in whole grain, fruit, and vegetable carbohydrates in the lunch program. Our results demonstrated that δC measurements provide a valuable tool to examine carbohydrate sources in an individual's diet throughout the day. We believe that this tool could be beneficial to studies examining the relationship between sugar sweetened beverages, added sugars, and refined carbohydrates and health outcomes like diabetes and obesity in both adolescent and adult populations.

The investigation of wildlife trade and crime has benefitted from advances in technology and scientific development in a variety of fields. Stable isotope analysis (SIA) represents one rapidly developing approach that has considerable potential to contribute to wildlife trade investigation, especially in complementing other methods including morphological, genetic, and elemental approaches. Here, we review recent progress in the application of SIA in wildlife trade research to highlight strengths, shortcomings, and areas for development in the future.

Successive crop harvest results in soil silicon (Si) loss, which constantly reduces soil available Si. Agricultural measures that can increase the availability of soil Si are in urgent need in agroecosystems. Enhanced weathering of silicate minerals can effectively replenish soil Si, which will promote plant uptake of Si, formation of plant phytolith occluded carbon (PhytOC), and the sequestration of atmospheric CO.

Mangrove forests are crucial coastal "blue carbon" ecosystems, known for their significant carbon sequestration capabilities to "carbon neutrality" and mitigating global climate change. We used Pb radioisotope dating to analyze sedimentation rates in the sediments of the Oujiang River Estuary mangrove forest, to calculate organic carbon burial rate, and to assess the characteristics and sources of organic carbon burial. The results showed that the average total organic carbon content in the sediments was 1.

Rationale: The analysis of natural abundance isotopes in biogenic NO molecules provides valuable insights into the nature of their precursors and their role in biogeochemical cycles. However, current methodologies (for example, the isotopocule map approach) face limitations, as they only enable the estimation of combined contributions from multiple processes at once rather than discriminating individual sources. This study aimed to overcome this challenge by developing a novel methodology for the partitioning of NO sources in soil, combining natural abundance isotopes and the use of a N tracer (N Gas Flux method) in parallel incubations.

Nitrate pollution in water bodies is a worldwide environmental problem, and identifying the sources of nitrate is of great significance to guarantee the sustainable use of water resources. A variety of water chemistry indicators and nitrate nitrogen and oxygen isotopes (N-NO and O-NO) were used to analyze the water chemistry characteristics of water bodies in Shiyan to identify the sources of nitrate in the water bodies and to calculate the contribution rate of nitrate from different pollution sources of the water bodies using the SIMMR model. The results showed that the hydrochemical types of surface water and groundwater in the study area were dominated by the HCO-Ca·Mg type, and the formation of nitrate in the water body was mainly affected by nitrification, with non-obvious denitrification.
