Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a significant mental condition characterized by the presence of obsessions and compulsions. Mental compulsions are defined as compulsions with no overt behavioral or motoric symptoms, such as repeating certain words or phrases in the mind. The exact prevalence of mental compulsions could be underestimated due to measurement issues using the Y-BOCS (Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale) and its clinical characteristics.

Female genital cutting (FGC) involves the removal of women's external genitalia for non-therapeutic reasons. An estimated 38,000 women living in Sweden have undergone some form of the procedure. These women often belong to marginalised minorities of immigrant women from countries where FGC is widespread.

A central question of human psychology is whether and when people change for the better. Although it has long been assumed that emotion plays a central role in self-regulation, the role of specific emotions in motivating a desire for self-change has been largely ignored. We report 2 studies examining people's lived experiences of self-conscious emotions, particularly shame, in motivating a desire for self-change.
