Objective: The African Neuropsychology Battery (ANB) includes eight culturally appropriate cognitive tests developed for use in the Congo and other sub-Saharan African populations. The current study examines the reliability of the ANB in three samples of participants of African descent.

Methods: Subjects were recruited in the United States and the Congo to participate in three studies of ANB internal consistency reliability (Study 1), test-retest reliability (Study 2), and interrater reliability for the two ANB measures (i.e., Visuospatial Memory and Proverb Tests) requiring examiner ratings of response adequacy (Study 3). Subjects were administered ANB tests of visuospatial perception, language, memory, abstract reasoning, and problem solving. We calculated Cronbach's alpha, corrected item-total correlations and mean inter-item correlations for internal consistency, Pearson product-moment correlations and intraclass correlation coefficients for test-retest reliability, and intraclass correlation coefficients for interrater reliability.

Results: The ANB tests had acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alphas ranging from .37 to .93). Across subtests, test-retest reliability coefficients ranged from .39 to .91, and intraclass correlation stability coefficients (ICCs) ranged from .39 to .82. Of the two ANB tests requiring interrater reliability, only the Proverb Test had a low ICC of .13, (confidence intervals: -.29 to .52).

Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that most ANB tests show adequate reliability in participants of African descent. However, the scoring criteria of the African Proverb Test require revision in order to improve the interrater reliability of the measure.

Background: There is limited research on the sonographic view of people with skeletal malocclusions. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the sonographic findings of the masseter muscle in patients with skeletal malocclusions.

Methods: In this descriptive study, 48 patients aged 15-20 years with skeletal class I, II, and III malocclusions (n = 16) who were referred to Mashhad Dental School for treatment were selected.

[Patients with low socio-economic status: is orthodontic treatment more complex?].

Orthod Fr

November 2024

Département d’orthodontie, Faculté d’Odontologie, rue Guillaume Paradin, 69372 Lyon cedex 08, France

Introduction: Patients from low socioeconomic backgrounds are empirically considered more difficult to treat. The objectives were to evaluate low socioeconomic status of patients as a factor associated with increased treatment need and the correlation between socioeconomic status and dysmorphosis on one hand, and cooperation level on the other.

Material And Methods: This was a retrospective comparative monocentric observational cohort study.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to analyze the pharyngeal airway dimensions of Emirati individuals based on different skeletal patterns, using CBCT scans from 103 adult subjects classified into Class I, II, and III skeletal groups.
  • - Findings indicated significant associations between airway measurements and facial metrics, with correlations observed between volumes of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx, as well as between these volumes and anterior facial height.
  • - Notably, skeletal Class I exhibited a larger nasopharynx volume compared to Class II and III, while other airway parameters showed no significant differences; the study concluded that various airway parameters correlated with anterior facial height across the different skeletal patterns.

Cephalometric differences in grades II and IV adenoid hypertrophy: A cross-sectional study.

J Orthod Sci

September 2024

Department of Orthodontics, College of Dentistry, University of Baghdad, Baghdad, Iraq.

Objectives: This study aims to determine whether there were cephalometric changes between grades II and IV adenoid hypertrophy.

Methods And Materials: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 6-12-year-old patients selected from the ear, nose, and throat department at Imam Al-Hussein Medical City in Karbala. Patients were classified into three groups (each = 40) based on endoscopic findings: control, grade II, and grade IV.
