Background: Angiography-derived microcirculatory resistance (AMR) is proposed as a novel, pressure- temperature-wire-free and less-invasive method to evaluate coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD). This study aims to examine the prognostic role of CMD assessed by AMR in predicting adverse events in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included ACS with CKD patients in the China-Japan Friendship Hospital from January 2016 to November 2022.

Aims: Early identification of healthy subjects prone to develop cardiac dysfunction may be instrumental to prevention strategies. Our study aimed to evaluate whether circulating levels of growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) could predict adverse changes in echocardiographic indexes of cardiac structure and function in an initially healthy populational familial cohort with a long follow-up (STANISLAS cohort).

Methods And Results: We evaluated 1679 participants (49 ± 14 years, 48% males) included in the fourth visit (V4) of the STANISLAS cohort with available GDF-15 measurements (Olink proteomic analysis) and echocardiographic parameters.

Background: The GRACE (Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events) risk score is a well-established tool for predicting major cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome. However, its application in acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) requires refinement to enhance its predictive accuracy in clinical settings.

Methods: In this study, we conducted a retrospective analysis of the incidence of out-of-hospital all-cause death (ACD), calculated the correlation and significance of the GRACE score indicators with ACD, and reduced the scores corresponding to insignificant and low-correlation indicators to adjust the scores for survive patients.

What Motivates Older Sedentary People Living With HIV in the United States to Participate in an Exercise Trial? A Qualitative Study.

December 2024

Evelyn Iriarte, PhD, MSN, RN, was an Adjunct Instructor, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile School of Nursing, Santiago, Chile, and was a Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Colorado College of Nursing, Aurora, Colorado, USA. Dr. Iriarte is now an Assistant Professor, University of Colorado College of Nursing, Aurora, Colorado, USA.

Although exercise supports the physical function and health of older people living with HIV (PLWH), less than half of PLWH globally achieve recommended levels of activity. A qualitative descriptive design was used to determine what motivates sedentary PLWH, 50 years and older, to participate in an exercise trial. Interviews were conducted with PLWH who participated in an exercise trial (n = 30) and PLWH who declined enrollment in the same exercise trial (n = 4).

Anthropogenic coal mining reducing groundwater storage in the Yellow River Basin.

State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Anthropogenic coal mining and water consumption significantly impact groundwater storage (GWS) in China's Yellow River Basin, leading to a decline of about -7.52 mm/year from 2003 to 2020.
  • The study used advanced methods like GRACE satellite data and Random Forest modeling to identify that water consumption from coal mining is the primary driver of changes in GWS, especially in eastern and northern mining regions.
  • While vegetation restoration typically helps the environment, it paradoxically increased groundwater drought during the growing season in the basin, highlighting the need for informed water resource management policies.
