This article shows the full characteristics (, the phase situation as well as the relaxation and vibrational dynamics) of the ()-4'-(1-methyloctyloxycarbonyl)biphenyl-4-yl 4-[5-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxy)pentyl-1-oxy]-benzoate chiral liquid crystal. Besides two enantiotropic chiral smectic phases (SmC* and ), the compound under study also forms the hexatic smectic phase and two crystal phases (Cr1 and Cr2). The XRD patterns imply a similar structure of both crystal phases. The sample crystallizes upon slow cooling, while the phase undergoes a glass transition during fast cooling. Upon subsequent heating, cold crystallization is observed. Our research reveals the complex relaxation dynamics in the identified thermodynamic states, , two relaxations up to the beginning of cold crystallization, three modes in the crystal phases and seven processes in all smectic phases. The results from the scaling of the dielectric response indicate that the origin of the dynamics and behavior of the dielectric permittivity is the same for all phases, regardless of the change in temperature and/or external biasing field. The high value of the fragility index ( ≈ 146) indicates that the compound under study is a fragile glass-forming system. The region of the -COO- and -COC- group stretching vibrations is primarily sensitive to the structural changes occurring during phase transitions.

High photothermal conversion efficiency of RF sputtered TiO Magneli phase thin films and its linear correlation with light absorption capacity.

RF-sputtering is used to deposit TiO-Magneli-phase films onto various substrates at deposition temperatures (T) ranging from 25 to 650 °C. Not only the structural, but also electrical conductivity, optical absorbance and photothermal properties of the TiO films are shown to change significantly with T. A T of 500 °C is pointed out as the optimal temperature that yields highly-crystalized pure-TiO-Magneli phase with a densely-packed morphology and a conductivity as high as 740 S/cm.

Topological semimetals have recently garnered widespread interest in the quantum materials research community due to their symmetry-protected surface states with dissipationless transport which have potential applications in next-generation low-power electronic devices. One such material, [Formula: see text], exhibits Dirac nodal arcs and although the topological properties of single crystals have been investigated, there have been no reports in crystalline thin film geometry. We examined the growth of [Formula: see text] heterostructures on a range of single crystals by optimizing the electron beam evaporation of Pt and Sn and studied the effect of vacuum thermal annealing on phase and crystallinity.

This work reports magnetic field direction dependent second magnetisation peak (SMP) anomaly in single crystals of oxygenated [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text] ab. Detailed investigations on crystal A revealed the direction dependence of SMP anomaly at temperatures below 25 K, above which the direction dependence vanishes. The state of spatial order of the vortex lattice was found to be correlated to the vortex lattice symmetry that underwent a change at certain fields and was captured via single flux jumps observed in the third and fifth quadrant of magnetisation hysteresis loops.

Widespread geogenic uranium (U) contamination of Indian groundwaters is of serious concern; yet little is known of the dominant forms and release mechanisms of U in these aquifers. Interestingly, manganese (Mn)-rich aquifers, highly buffered by dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and saturated with rhodochrosite [MnCO], have shown low U ( View Article and Find Full Text PDF

This review explores a method of visualizing a demagnetization field () within a thin-foiled NdFeB specimen using electron holography observation. Mapping the is critical in electron holography as it provides the only information on magnetic flux density. The map within a NdFeB thin foil, derived from this method, showed good agreement with the micromagnetic simulation result, providing valuable insights related to coercivity.
