AI Article Synopsis

  • This systematic review summarizes research on how young people in Canada and the US use cannabis, focusing on different methods of consumption and product types.
  • A total of 26 studies were analyzed, revealing that smoking is the most common method among youth, although its popularity seems to be decreasing, while vaping is on the rise.
  • The diverse ways cannabis is used make it challenging to compile average statistics, highlighting the need for better education and guidance for youth, especially in areas where cannabis is legal.

Article Abstract

Background: The current systematic review aimed to summarize the literature on the prevalence of routes of administration and cannabis products used among youth and young adults in Canada and the United States (US).

Methods: Five academic databases were searched in April 2020 and February 2021. Peer-reviewed articles were included if they were a population-based quantitative observational study describing the prevalence of a cannabis product or route of administration among youth and young adults in Canada or the US. Risk of bias was assessed using Hoy and colleagues' risk of bias assessment tool. A narrative review was conducted.

Results: Twenty-six studies were identified for the following routes of administration: smoking (n = 16), vaping (n = 21), dabbing (n = 3), oral (n = 13), topical (n = 1); and products: dried flower (n = 2), and concentrates (n = 8). Smoking had the highest prevalence rates among youth and young adults; however, rates of use appeared to reduce over time. Conversely, prevalence of vaping appeared to increase over time. Fewer studies focused on oral or dabbed cannabis but those that did reported prevalence estimates of approximately a third among recent cannabis consumers.

Discussion: The heterogeneity of cannabis routes of administration restricted our ability to collate average prevalence estimates. In jurisdictions where non-medical cannabis is legal, policymakers should provide guidance and education to youth on each type of product and routes of administration.

Other: Funding for this study was provided by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (PJT-153342). The current review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020169275).

Transgender (TG) people are individuals whose gender identity and sex assigned at birth do not match. They often undergo gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), a medical intervention that allows the acquisition of secondary sex characteristics more aligned with their individual gender identity, providing consistent results in the improvement of numerous socio-psychological variables. However, GAHT targets different body systems, and some side effects are recorded, although not yet fully identified and characterized.

Indigestible gut permeability markers are used to assess gut integrity and can be administered to calves via a milk meal (MM) or orally pulsed (OP). This study investigated how marker administration route (ADM_R) affects the estimation of gut permeability in relation to milk replacer (MR) fat inclusion. Thirty-two newborn Holstein calves were blocked based on their arrival sequence at the facility.

Article Synopsis
  • Pharmacokinetics studies how drugs move through the body, focusing on absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, while pharmacodynamics examines the drug's effects on the body.
  • The combination of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies helps correlate drug concentrations with their therapeutic effects, providing valuable data for regulatory purposes and establishing administration guidelines.
  • Key considerations for pharmacokinetic studies include subject characteristics, dosages, sample types, collection times, and analytical methods to ensure accurate assessment of drug effects and concentrations.

Background: Workplace health screening rarely includes measures of cardiorespiratory fitness, despite it being a greater predictor of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality than other routinely measured risk factors. This study aimed to determine the comparative acceptability of using a novel seismocardiography device to measure cardiorespiratory fitness via VO max during a workplace health check.

Methods: Participants were invited to participate in workplace health screening sessions where VO max was assessed by both seismocardiography at rest and sub-maximal exercise testing, in order for acceptability of both to be compared across multiple domains.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether Trypanosoma vivax is transmitted via rectal palpation in cattle, using the same glove with different blood scores, from an animal with an acute infection of this protozoan. In addition, the efficacy of iodine as disinfectant, together with water with or without the presence of feces, to prevent the transmission of T. vivax in cattle during the rectal palpation process was evaluated in the laboratory and animals.
