Background: (Rupr. & Maxim.) Harms, a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat various diseases, including ischemic, heart diseases, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), hypertension and neurasthenia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anticancer activity of (ASE).

Materials: MTT assay, clonogenicity, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), flow cytometry and Western blot were employed to evaluate the viability and invasion of liver cancer cells. In addition, luciferase assay was used to delineate the inhibitory activity of ethanol extract against NF-κB.

Results: Our results showed that the ethanol extract of ASE could decrease the viability of cancer cells. In addition, the ethanol extract could decrease the protein levels of Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), MMP-9, t-protein kinase B (Akt) and p-Akt, but increase those of E-cadherin. Nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-κB)-Luciferase assay showed the ethanol extract could effectively inhibit the activity of NF-κB. Furthermore, fourteen compounds including seven active compounds were isolated and activities against NF-κB were investigated.

Conclusions: This study confirmed that the ASE could be as an alternative or complementary therapy to treat liver cancer.

Encapsulation of walnut husk and pomegranate peel extracts by alginate and chitosan-coated nanoemulsions.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Department of Food and Agricultural Products, Food Technology and Agricultural Products Research Center, Standard Research Institute (SRI), PO Box 31745-139, Karaj, Iran.

Walnut husk extract (WHE) and pomegranate peel extract (PPE) were produced through ultrasound-assisted extraction. Total phenol, flavonoid and tannin contents (TPC, TFC and TTC), antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were determined. The best extracts were used for production of alginate (Alg) and chitosan (CS)-coated nanoemulsions containing WHE (NWHE) or PPE (NPPE).

Oxidative damage, oxidative inflammation, and a range of downstream diseases represent significant threats to human health. The application of natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents can help prevent and mitigate these associated diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of walnut green husk (WNGH) as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent in an in vitro setting.

In recent years, global trends indicate consumer interest in functional foods. Thus, there is a trend to replace the use of artificial colors with natural colors that, in addition to being attractive to consumers, provide benefits to the biological functions of the human organism. The objective of this research was the solvent extraction of a natural dye from the roselle flower, its identification and evaluation of its behavior at different pH and temperatures.

UPLC-MS metabolite profiling and antioxidant activity of extract.

PeerJ

January 2025

Cancer Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Zhejiang Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tongde Hospital of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Background: The objective of the present study is to examine the total phenolic and flavonoid content of an ethanol extract of and to evaluate its phytochemical properties, antioxidant activity, and capacity to protect DNA from damage. This pharmaceutical/food resource mushroom may serve as a novel substitute functional food for health-conscious consumers, given its promising source of phenolics and flavonoids.

Methods: ethanol extract (SEE) was evaluated for total phenolic and flavonoid contents, while UPLC-MS analysis was used for terpenoids, phenylpropanoid, flavonoids, steroidal, phenols identification, and function prediction.

has been traditionally used in northeastern Algeria for treating gastrointestinal disorders, particularly ulcers. This study aimed to assess the gastroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of a crude hydroalcoholic extract derived from the leaves of , as well as its subsequent fractions. The gastroprotective effect was studied in an ethanol-induced ulcer model in mice.
