Single atom alloys (SAA) have recently drawn increased attention due to their unique structure, high atomic utilization, and fascinating catalytic performance. However, their controllable synthesis still presents a challenge. This study proposes an electrochemical self-catalysis (ESC) strategy to synthesize Pd@Pt/C SAA catalysts, that is, depositing Pt atoms on Pd nanocrystals through in situ decomposition of sodium formate. The relationship between composition and structure of Pd@Pt/C is distinguished through a combination of electrochemical analysis, sphere-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray adsorption spectra. That relationship evolved from SAA to a sea-island structure and even a core-shell structure with composition-controllable atomic ratios, highlighting the great diversity and convenience of this method in nanostructure construction. The Pd@Pt/C SAA catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity to formic acid oxidation with a peak current density of 5.2 A/mg, which is about 18.6 times that of the commercial Pd/C. density functional theory calculations revealed that the enhanced activity was due to the "passivation" of Pd sites near the Pt single atoms, which attenuated the adsorption of CO. Based on electrochemical principles, this ESC strategy was also expanded to prepare a series of Pd-based SAA, including Pd-Au, Pd-Ir, and Pd-Bi.

Well-defined single-atom catalysts (SACs) serve as ideal model systems for directly comparing experimental results with theoretical calculations, offering profound insights into heterogeneous catalytic processes. However, precisely designing and controllably synthesizing SACs remain challenging due to the unpredictable structure evolution of active sites and generation of embedded active sites, which may bring about steric hindrance during chemical reactions. Herein, we present the precious nonpyrolysis synthesis of Re SACs with a well-defined phenanthroline coordination supported by NiO (Re-phen/NiO).

The mechanisms of NO reduction by CO over nitrogen-doped graphene (N-graphene)-supported single-atom Ni catalysts in the presence of O, HO, CO, and SO have been studied via density functional theory (DFT) modeling. The catalyst is represented by a single Ni atom bonded to four N atoms on N-graphene. Several alternative reaction pathways, including adsorption of NO on the Ni site, direct reduction of NO by CO, decomposition of NO to NO followed by reduction of NO to N, formation of active oxygen radical O*, and reduction of O* by CO, were hypothesized and the energy barrier corresponding to each of the reaction steps was calculated using DFT.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted widespread attention due to their potential to replace platinum-based catalysts in achieving efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet the rational optimization of SACs remains challenging due to their elusive reaction mechanisms. Herein, by employing ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and a thermodynamic integration method, we have constructed the potential-dependent free energetics of ORR on a single iron atom catalyst dispersed on nitrogen-doped graphene (Fe-N/C) and further integrated these parameters into a microkinetic model. We demonstrate that the rate-determining step (RDS) of the ORR on SACs is potential-dependent rather than invariant within the operative potential range.

This study deals with the understanding of hydrogen atom scattering from graphene, a process critical for exploring C-H bond formation and energy transfer during atom surface collision. In our previous work [Shi, L.; 2023, 159, 194102], starting from a cell with 24 carbon atoms treated periodically, we have achieved quantum dynamics (QD) simulations with a reduced-dimensional model (15D) and a simulation in full dimensionality (75D).

Single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) with excellent biological catalytic activity have emerged as promising candidates for advancing biomedical applications. Herein, we synthesized a RuN-SAzyme by thermal decomposition. In experiments, the RuN-SAzyme demonstrated exceptional catalytic efficiency in mimicking the activity of peroxidase, with a Michaelis-Menten constant () for 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine reaching 0.
