Advancing microfluidic point-of-care platelet function tests: opportunities and challenges from bench to market.

Front Bioeng Biotechnol

December 2024

George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, United States.

Platelets are critical for blood clotting, with shear-induced platelet aggregation (SIPA) playing a key role in hemostasis and the prevention of excessive bleeding. SIPA function potentially leads to life-threatening diseases such as hemorrhage and myocardial infarction, which are leading causes of death globally. Point-of-care platelet function tests (POC PFTs) are developed to assess platelet dysfunction and distinguish between normal and abnormal platelet activity.

The devastating pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) began in Wuhan, China, and spread rapidly through most parts of the world in the second half of 2020. The air droplet spread of SARS-CoV-2 is of great global health concern as it is potentially fatal. Various drugs and treatment modalities have been tried to date, but none have been found to be definitive.

Globally, traumatic injuries and severe hemorrhagic wounds resulting from natural disasters, wars, traffic accidents, and operation rooms, especially during birth, are among the most difficult humanitarian and economic problems. Thus, the priority in emergency medical treatment is reducing unexpected blood loss, which can significantly influence a patient's rescue and recovery speed. For the immediate cessation of bleeding in severe hemorrhagic wounds and to speed up their healing, environmentally friendly γ-ionizing irradiation technology was used to develop innovative natural-based hydrogels impregnated with traditional medicinal plant extracts (MPE) with proven hemostatic and bactericidal potential as potential dressings for hemostasis, infection control, and wound healing.

Background: Despite accumulating evidence and recommendations for management of colonic diverticular bleeding (CDB), the changes in its clinical management and outcomes remain unknown.

Methods: We performed a retrospective tendency analysis on a biennial basis, a propensity score-matched cohort study between the first and latter half groups, and mediation analyses to compare the diagnostic and treatment methods between January 2010 and December 2019 (CODE BLUE-J Study).

Results: A total of 6575 patients with CDB were included.

Introduction: Emicizumab prophylaxis is approved for people of all ages with haemophilia A (HA) including infants and children. Although previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy and tolerability of emicizumab in infants with HA, real-world data on emicizumab use in infants are limited. The Haemophilia A in Infancy and NewbOrns: multi-instituional prospective observational study to assess the efficacy anD safety of Emicizumab (HINODE) study aims to evaluate the coagulation potential and safety of emicizumab prophylaxis in infants with congenital HA from birth to <12 months of age.
