Published: February 2022

In this issue of Cell Metabolism, Cheng et al. identify olfactory receptor Olfr109 in β cells with increased expression in islets from mouse models of obesity and type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Binding of a small insulin fragment to Olfr109 fosters islet inflammation, β cell failure, and diabetes progression.

Odours released by objects in natural environments can contain information about their spatial locations. In particular, the correlation of odour concentration timeseries produced by two spatially separated sources contains information about the distance between the sources. For example, mice are able to distinguish correlated and anti-correlated odour fluctuations at frequencies up to 40 Hz, while insect olfactory receptor neurons can resolve fluctuations exceeding 100 Hz.

Structural comparisons of human and mouse fungiform taste buds.

Chem Senses

Dept. Cell & Devel. Biology, Rocky Mountain Taste & Smell Center, Univ. Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, CO.

Taste buds are commonly studied in rodent models, but some differences exist between mice and humans in terms of gustatory mechanisms and sensitivities. Whether these functional differences are reflected in structural differences between species is unclear. Using immunofluorescent image stacks, we compared morphological and molecular characteristics of mouse and human fungiform taste buds.

V-ATPases are ubiquitous and evolutionarily conserved rotatory proton pumps, which are crucial for maintaining various biological functions. Previous investigations have shown that a V-ATPase is present in the support cells of moth trichoid sensilla and influences their olfactory sensory neuron performance. Generally, V-ATPases are thought to regulate the pH value within the sensillum lymph, and aid K homeostasis within the sensillum.

Noradrenergic inputs from the locus coeruleus to anterior piriform cortex and the olfactory bulb modulate olfactory outputs.

Norepinephrine (NE) released from locus coeruleus (LC) noradrenergic (NAergic) neurons plays a pivotal role in the regulation of olfactory behaviors. However, the precise circuits and receptor mechanisms underlying this function are not well understood. Here, in DBH-Cre mice model, we show that LC NAergic neurons project directly to both anterior piriform cortex (aPC) and the olfactory bulb (OB).

Sniffing is a motivated behavior displayed by nearly all terrestrial vertebrates. While sniffing is associated with acquiring and processing odors, sniffing is also intertwined with affective and motivated states. The systems which influence the display of sniffing are unclear.
