Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is widely used as a protective layer for few-atom-thick crystals and heterostructures (HSs), and it hosts quantum emitters working up to room temperature. In both instances, strain is expected to play an important role, either as an unavoidable presence in the HS fabrication or as a tool to tune the quantum emitter electronic properties. Addressing the role of strain and exploiting its tuning potentiality require the development of efficient methods to control it and of reliable tools to quantify it. Here we present a technique based on hydrogen irradiation to induce the formation of wrinkles and bubbles in hBN, resulting in remarkably high strains of ∼2%. By combining infrared (IR) near-field scanning optical microscopy and micro-Raman measurements with numerical calculations, we characterize the response to strain for both IR-active and Raman-active modes, revealing the potential of the vibrational properties of hBN as highly sensitive strain probes.

Accurate prediction of physicochemical properties, such as electronic energy, enthalpy, free energy, and average vibrational frequencies, is critical for optimizing lithium-ion battery (LIB) performance. Traditional methods like density functional theory (DFT) are computationally expensive and inefficient for large-scale screening. In this study, we apply active learning on top of graph neural networks (GNNs) to efficiently predict these properties.

Magnetic fluorescent nanomaterials have broad application prospects as taggants in fields such as anticounterfeiting identification, suspicious object tracking, and potential fingerprint recognition in forensic medicine. It is a common method to synthesize magnetic fluorescent composite nanoparticles by preparing a shell on the surface of magnetic particles to load fluorescent materials. In this work, a magnetic fluorescence nanohybrid was synthesized by in situ encapsulation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) during the preparation of a SiO shell on the surface of FeO nanoparticles.

Optomechanical sensors provide a platform for probing acoustic/vibrational properties at the micro-scale. Here, we used cavity optomechanical sensors to interrogate the acoustic environment of adjacent air bubbles in water. We report experimental observations of the volume acoustic modes of these bubbles, including both the fundamental Minnaert breathing mode and a family of higher-order modes extending into the megahertz frequency range.

This study introduces a comprehensive methodology for selecting blasthole diameters in open-pit mining, aiming to reduce the environmental impact while addressing the limitations of traditional empirical methods that often yield suboptimal productivity, cost efficiency. By integrating critical parameters such as bench height, rock and explosive properties, desired fragmentation size, production scale, and operational specifics, the methodology seeks to minimize negative effects on nearby communities while optimizing blasting practices. The methodology consists of four key steps: calculating potential diameters based on bench height, verifying influential factors affecting diameter selection, assessing environmental impacts of blasting activities, such as blasting-induced vibration and flyrock, and ultimately choosing the optimal diameter.

This article studies the synthesis, as well as the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of Eu-doped ZnO quantum dots (QDs) and investigates the energy transfer mechanism from the ZnO host to Eu ions using Reisfeld's approximation. Eu-doped ZnO QDs at varying concentrations (0-7%) were successfully prepared using a wet chemical method. The successful doping of Eu ions into the ZnO host lattice, as well as the composition and valence states of the elements present in the sample, were confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses.
