Introduction: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) is a rare inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. NMOSD pathogenesis is mainly mediated by antibodies directed against aquaporin4 (AQP4 antibody). Immunoadsorption (IA) could specifically remove pathogenic antibody to alleviate the disease. Until now, prospective studies concerning the efficacy of IA on NMOSD are scarce. This study aims to prospectively evaluate the efficacy and safety of IA in the treatment of NMOSD.
Patients And Methods: We included patients with AQP4 antibody-positive NMOSD who were hospitalized from September 2019 to September 2020, with no significant improvement in symptoms after 1 week of high-dose intravenous steroid therapy. Tryptophan IA therapy was initiated with five sessions on alternate days. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), visual acuity, and laboratory values were measured before and after IA, with a follow-up of 6 months. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics were collected. Related side effects were recorded.
Results: Seven patients were enrolled in the present study. After five IA, the patients' EDSS decreased from 5.71 ± 2.04 to 4.64 ± 2.29, P = .006. The visual acuity of the three visually impaired patients was improved. AQP4-IgG decreased significantly from 80.00 (interquartile range [IQR], 21.00-80.00) (U/mL) to 9.72 (IQR, 5.21-55.57) (U/mL) (P = .018). MRI of the spinal cord showed the scope of the myelopathy was narrowed and no significant enhancement was observed on postcontrast T1-weighted image at 90 days after treatment. Only one patient had transient hypotension.
Conclusions: Tryptophan IA therapy effectively and safely improved neurological function and visual acuity, and reduced the AQP4 antibody concentration in patients with NMOSD.

Deformities, body asymmetries, and muscle contractures are common consequences of atypical postural patterns in children with c ongenital Zika syndrome (CZS). This study aimed to evaluate the posture of children with CZS, considering their neurological and visual impairments. Ophthalmological assessment included binocular best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) using Teller Acuity Cards II (TAC II) and an ocular motility evaluation.

: Our purpose was to appraise the efficacy and safety of intravitreous vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor (anti-VEGF) therapy combined with steroids for persistent diabetic macular edema. : A systematic review was conducted of the research evaluating the combination therapy of anti-VEGF and steroids for persistent diabetic macular edema compared to anti-VEGF alone. A meta-analysis was performed using a protocol registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023476333).

: This study evaluates the effectiveness of therapeutic keratoplasty for fungal keratitis and explores the diagnosis and management challenges of this infectious corneal disease. We retrospectively analyzed therapeutic keratoplasty cases at a tertiary hospital for keratitis when standard treatments failed. : Five cases of keratitis, unresponsive to typical antifungal treatments, required keratoplasty due to fast progression and diagnostic difficulties.

This study compares the long-term intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering efficacy of standalone MINIject (iSTAR Medical, Belgium) suprachoroidal implantation and two iStent (Glaukos, CA, USA) trabecular bypass implantation using a systematic review and meta-analysis. Systematic review of standalone implantation of MINIject or iStent inject with at least 24 months of follow up. The mean and standard deviation of IOP and the number of IOP-lowering medications at baseline and at 24 months were extracted.

Age-related conditions, such as being misinformed, having limited oral health literacy, and the loss of manual dexterity, autonomy, or visual acuity, may act as barriers to oral health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two different oral hygiene instruction methods on oral hygiene and the self-perception of oral health in older adults. This randomized controlled trial included participants aged 65 and older who completed a questionnaire on socio-economic factors, self-perceived oral health, and oral hygiene behaviours.
