We assess the distribution of trapezial inclination in a young population in order to propose a threshold for trapezial dysplasia. One hundred peritrapezial views were reconstructed from wrist computed tomography scan datasets to measure trapezial inclination. Seventy peritrapezial views were constructed from 10 datasets to assess the influence of radiograph rotation. Mean trapezial inclination in our population was 8° (range 0.2-17.9). Fifteen degrees of radiographic pronation or supination did not alter trapezial inclination significantly. Intra-rater consistency and absolute agreement had an interclass correlation (ICC) of 0.95. Inter-rater consistency and absolute agreement had an ICC of 0.88. Trapezial inclination is a reliable measurement for trapezial dysplasia with an excellent intra-rater and good inter-rater reliability and does not change significantly with 15° of radiographic pronation or supination. These normal values can be used to propose a threshold for trapezial dysplasia in the management of trapeziometacarpal joint instability in the younger population. IV.

Objectives: To investigate the relationship between thumb laxity (passive mobility), shape of the trapezium and trapezial mobility relative to the second metacarpal.
Methods: Sixty normal volunteers were assessed for the amount of thumb laxity by measuring the shortest distance of the thumb nail to the radius when the thumb was forcefully approximated to the forearm with the wrist in flexion. The inclination of the distal surface of the trapezium (angle β) and the mobility of the trapezium relative to the II metacarpal (Δangle α) were assessed using dynamic X-rays in maximal radial and ulnar deviation.

To study the articular amplitude of the first ray of both hands and feet using passive mobilisation, either on fresh human cadavers or on living primates after anesthesia (namely eight pongidae, 15 cercopithecidae, two platirrhinii, eight lemuroidae, three daubentonidae, two loridae and two galagonidae). Plans slightly parasagittal and parafrontal have been chosen to obtain the maximum dorsal and palmar or plantar inclinations and the maximum lateral and medial inclinations. The pronosupination of the first ray has been evaluated in relation of these plans and alike for the hand of the simian primates on the plan of the concavity and the convexity of trapezial surface.
