A "nucleobase pair" is not identical with a "pair of basic ligands", as only in the first case, the existence of inter-base hydrogen bonds is implied. The cross-linking of two nucleobases or two basic ligands by a metal ion of suitable geometry produces either "metal-modified" or "metal-mediated" species, but in the author's opinion, this difference is not always properly made. This commentary is an attempt to provide a clearer distinction between the two scenarios.

Generally, the pH of fluorinated groundwater or many industrial wastewater is neutral, while the majority of metal-modified adsorbents can work efficiently only under acidic conditions. In this study, we synthesized a novel hybrid adsorbent, Mg-Zr-D213, by loading nano-Mg/Zr binary metal (hydrogen) oxides in a strong-base anion exchanger, D213, to enhance the adsorption of fluoride from neutral water. Mg-Zr-D213 exhibited a better fluoride-removal capacity in neutral water than monometallic modified resins.

Catalytic pyrolysis is an effective means for high-value utilization of biomass. This study investigated the effect of solid base catalysts (CaO, calcium aluminate catalysts CaAl-1, CaAl-2, CaAl-3), acid zeolite catalysts (ZSM-5, Fe/ZSM-5, Co/ZSM-5, Ni/ZSM-5, Cu/ZSM-5, Zn/ZSM-5) and base-acid tandem catalysts on pine sawdust pyrolysis using Py-GC/MS. Acid zeolite catalysts exhibited robust deoxidation and aromatization capabilities, favoring aromatics, while solid base catalysts yielded more phenols and ketones.

Uniform covalent organic framework nanoparticles (COF NPs) with a well-defined pore structure may provide a robust platform for scaffolding enzymes. Herein, bipyridine-based spherical COF NPs have been successfully prepared in this work through the Schiff base condensation reaction. Moreover, they are functionalized by metal modification and are further used for biosensor fabrication.

Quantum mechanical (QM) and hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) molecular dynamics simulations of a recently reported dinuclear mercury(II)-mediated base pair were performed aiming to analyse its intramolecular bonding pattern, its stability, and to obtain clues on the mechanism of the incorporation of mercury(II) into the DNA. The dynamic distance constraint was employed to find initial structures, control the dissociation process in an unbiased fashion and to determine the free energy required. A strong influence of the exocyclic carbonyl or amino groups of neighbouring base pairs on both the bonding pattern and the mechanism of incorporation was observed.
