Objective: To evaluate the Eustachian tube (ET) dimensions in patulous ET (PET) patients compared with that by aging using sitting 3D computed tomography (CT).

Study Design: Retrospective study.

Setting: Tertiary referral center.

Subjects And Methods: A retrospective survey of medical records in Sen-En Rifu Hospital identified 105 ears of 76 PET patients and 65 ears of 34 patients without ET dysfunction findings (non-PET). Subjects in both PET and non-PET groups were then divided into two age groups. Groups A and C defined as non-PET and PET subjects respectively, who were under the age of 60 years, while Groups B and D defined of non-PET and PET subjects respectively, who were 60 years and above. 3D CT (Accuitomo; Morita, Kyoto, Japan) was performed on all subjects in the sitting position. The ET lumen from the ET pharyngeal orifice to 15 mm was analyzed.

Results: No significant difference in the ET lumen near the pharyngeal orifice was found between Group A and C; however, there was a significant difference in the ET at points lateral to the pharyngeal orifice. The ET lumen was significantly larger at the site close to the pharyngeal orifice in Group B as compared to that of Group A. For the two groups of PET classified according to the size of the pharyngeal orifice and area close to the isthmus, age was only significantly different between two groups of pharyngeal orifice. On the contrary, sonotumometry and Ohta method were significantly different between the two groups of the area close to the isthmus.

Conclusion: The lumen of the ET is enlarged in both PET and aging. However, the responsible site was found to be different. While the enlargement of the ET lumen in 60 years and above subjects without PET mainly occurred near the pharyngeal orifice of the ET, it was near the isthmus in under 60 years PET patients. Further study of possible clinical implications of these findings as well as treatment strategy are required.

Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu, Linnaeus, 1758) is a mammalian Tayassuidae species from tropical to semi-arid areas. The morphological features of the oral cavity in this species were identified and described. Tonsils are secondary lymphoid organs essential for contact with antigens due to food and air intake.

Article Synopsis
  • Luffa cylindrica, a climbing herb valued for its nutrition and medicinal properties, is facing a significant decline in health due to root-knot nematode disease, particularly in Beihai, Guangxi, China, where almost 90% of the plants were affected.
  • Investigations revealed physical symptoms such as plant dwarfism, decreased yields, and prominent root knotted growth after analyzing the roots of the plants, which highlighted the presence of nematodes at different life stages.
  • Morphological characteristics of the identified nematodes, likely Meloidogyne enterolobii, matched previous descriptions, and DNA analysis using specific primers confirmed their presence, showing a targeted amplification of about 236 bp.

Endoscopic laryngopharyngeal surgery (ELPS) is a transoral surgery performed for the treatment of early-stage pharyngeal and supralaryngeal cancer. In Japan, ELPS is often chosen for transoral resection of hypopharyngeal cancer. However, in cases of trismus, exposing the hypopharynx even with ELPS using a curved laryngoscope may not be possible.

Comparative outcomes of microdebrider adenoidectomy, curettage adenoidectomy through oral cavity under 70 endoscope, and endoscopic transoral low-temperature ablation for adenoid hypertrophy.

Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol

November 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Beilun People's Hospital, Beilun District, Ningbo, 315800, Zhejiang Province, China. Electronic address:

Aim: We aimed to compare the effects of microdebrider adenoidectomy, curettage adenoidectomy through oral cavity under 70°endoscope, and endoscopic transoral low-temperature ablation on adenoid hypertrophy.

Methods: A total of 180 children suffering from adenoid hypertrophy hospitalized during November 2019 and November 2023 were allocated to group A (microdebrider adenoidectomy, n = 65), group B (curettage adenoidectomy through oral cavity under 70° nasal endoscope, n = 54), and group C (nasal endoscopic transoral low-temperature adenoid ablation, n = 61). The operation data (operation time and bleeding amount), pain score, postoperative recovery, and complications were compared.

Unmet needs in the treatment of chronic otitis media and Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) triggered the development of stents for the Eustachian tube (ET). In this study, for the first time, stents were placed in an artificially blocked ET to evaluate stent function. Eight adult female sheep were injected with stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA) on both sides to induce ETD.
