In this case report, the role of a myocardial bridge of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) and recent use of cannabis in a sudden death of a drug user is discussed, also considering the relevance of histopathological pulmonary findings. A 37-year-old man with a history of drug abuse was found dead in his house. External and autoptic examination were performed, as well as histologic and toxicologic analyses of tissues, organs and body fluids samples.

Article Synopsis
  • - Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF) affects a significant portion of the population, particularly the elderly, leading to high hospitalization rates (70-80%) and substantial mortality (40-50% over five years).
  • - The condition is characterized by increased stiffness in heart muscle cells, causing diastolic dysfunction and elevated filling pressures, with cardiac amyloidosis (CA) being a notable cause that leads to similar symptoms.
  • - There’s an urgent need to recognize and screen for transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) in older HFpEF patients, as early diagnosis can greatly improve treatment outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers conducted a study on 60 hearts, comparing postmortem measurements with echocardiographic values collected while the individuals were still alive.
  • * Results indicate that relying solely on postmortem ventricular wall thickness measurements, particularly left ventricle thickness, is not reliable for diagnosing hypertrophy; other autopsy findings must also be considered.

This study examines the results of autopsy examinations specifically aimed at documenting complications arising from the implantation phase and treatment with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) in patients with refractory cardiac arrest. ECMO and VA-ECMO in particular are life-saving interventions that, in the case of cardiac arrest, can temporarily replace cardiac pump function. VA-ECMO is, however, a very invasive procedure and is associated with early mechanical, haemorrhagic, and thrombotic events, infections, and late multi-organ dysfunction.

Article Synopsis
  • Pregnancy-Associated Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (P-SCAD) is the leading cause of heart attacks during and after pregnancy, with the study examining its presentation, treatment, and outcomes based on a review of 253 studies involving 316 patients.
  • Most patients were postpartum (79.6%), with common symptoms including ST-elevation myocardial infarction, and severe complications like cardiac arrest occurring in a significant number.
  • The study found a relatively low mortality rate of 4.1%, but a notable recurrence rate (23.4%) after initial treatment, suggesting a need for better diagnostic methods and treatment guidelines for this complex condition.
