This manuscript explores intersubjectivity through a conceptual construct for meaning-making that emphasizes three major interrelated elements-meaning making in interaction, making meaning with the body as well as the mind, and meaning making within an open dynamic system. These three elements are present in the literature on intersubjectivity with a wide range of terms used to describe various theoretical formulations. One objective of this manuscript is to illustrate how such a construct can be useful to understand the meaning-making observed in psychoanalysis, such as in the treatment of a young child on the autistic spectrum. The challenges in establishing an intersubjective state with a child on the autistic spectrum serve to highlight important features of intersubjectivity. As an important background to this clinical illustration, we illustrate the construct with the scientific paradigm of the well-known face-to-face still-face.
This paper explores cancer as a 'total social fact', considering it both a specific material entity and an immaterial phenomenon with social, political, and legal implications. Based on long-term ethnographic field studies on cancer as anticipation in the Danish welfare state, specifically within lung cancer diagnostics and the surveillance for 'tissue changes', the paper explores how cancer is constituted and experienced. Analyzing this new and rising cancer phenomenon, the paper attends to scale by focusing analytically on three levels (national, institutional, and intersubjective) and conceptualizes how cancer manifests at these different levels through practices of temporal curation.
Psychometrics conceptualizes a person's (or , or ), in a cognitive or educational domain, as a latent numerical quantity. Yet both conceptual and empirical studies have shown that the assumption of quantitative structure for such phenomena is unlikely to be tenable. A reason why most applications of psychometrics nevertheless continue to treat them as if they were numerical quantities may be that quantification is thought to be necessary to enable .
Intriguing explorations at the intersection of the fields of neuroscience and psychology are driven by the quest to understand the neural underpinnings of "the self" and their psychotherapeutic implications. These translational efforts pertain to the unique Creative Arts Therapies (CATs) and the attributes and value of the self-related processes they offer. The self is considered as a multi-layered complex construct, comprising bodily and mental constituents, subjective-objective perspectives, spatial and temporal dimensions.
Existing challenges to the legitimacy of mental health nursing in the United Kingdom and beyond have stimulated a critical self-reflection and discourse around the mental health nursing role, forcing the profession to question its identity and critically re-evaluate its position within the wider healthcare arena. In this discussion paper, I suggest that the current difficulties in conceptualising mental health nurse identity arise from our role being inherently interwoven with distinctive challenges and unique needs of our service users. Emerging from this idea is that the 'being' (and the 'doing') of mental health nursing is firmly situated within the sphere of intersubjective relations.
This paper explores the mechanisms that lead to a destructive tendency in the formation and functioning of the psychic apparatus, to the characteristic states of subjects who are drawn to non-life. The dynamics of the primary mother-child relationship involve a structural interaction between mind and body, subject and object. The dialectic between the life drive and the death drive is conceptualized as the structuring of homeostatic dynamic equilibria, in which both drives belong to the living, provided they are kept in a non-isolated system.
