In Denmark, the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown resulted in a compact season finisher for elite footballers, potentially impacting their mental health. This study aimed to investigate the protective role of resilience and the impeding role of trait anxiety on elite footballers' level and variability of well-being and emotional stability. One hundred and twenty-five male elite-level players ( = 25.04 ± 4.82) completed baseline measures on trait anxiety and resilience. Additionally, well-being and positive and negative affect were assessed before games (n = 24) over 62 days. Separate two-level regression analysis using Bayesian statistics was conducted to test potential relationships. Results show a credible positive relationship between the average level of well-being and within-person variability over time as well as the average level in positive affect. This indicates that resilience might be a protector for mental health. In addition, higher levels of trait anxiety (i.e., subscale ) were associated with higher levels of negative affect and higher variability over time. This indicates that trait anxiety might facilitate negative affect. No other credible relationships were found. High resilience and low trait anxiety are identified as relevant factors for mental health within elite footballers during COVID-19. Implications for practice are discussed.

Family Genetic Risk Communication and Reverse Cascade Testing in the BabySeq Project.

Genet Med

December 2024

Division of Genetics and Genomics, Boston Children's Hospital, Boston, MA; The Manton Center for Orphan Disease Research, Boston Children's Hospital, Boston, MA; Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA.

Purpose: Genomic sequencing of newborns (NBSeq) can initiate disease surveillance and therapy for children, and may identify at-risk relatives through reverse cascade testing. We explored genetic risk communication and reverse cascade testing among families of newborns who underwent exome sequencing and had a risk for autosomal dominant disease identified.

Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with parents of newborns enrolled in the BabySeq Project who had a pathogenic or likely-pathogenic (P/LP) variant associated with an autosomal dominant (AD) childhood- and/or adult-onset disease returned.

Background: Numerous studies have investigated the relevance of callous-unemotional traits in relation to externalizing psychopathology among children and adolescents. However, less research has examined the connections between callous-unemotional traits and internalizing psychopathology and findings were inconsistent. Consequently, the present study aimed to elucidate the role of callous-unemotional traits in the context of depression and anxiety while controlling for conduct problems, age, and gender.

Predictors of anxiety in endometriosis patients.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

December 2024

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University Hospital of the RWTH Aachen, Pauwelsstrasse 30, 52074, Aachen, Germany.

Purpose: To evaluate the main factors influencing anxiety in endometriosis patients presenting to an endometriosis centre in Germany.

Methods: One hundred and eighty-two patients were asked to complete the German version of the STAI (state anxiety and trait anxiety) questionnaire prior to examination for diagnosis and treatment of pelvic pain or suspected endometriosis. Typical endometriosis symptoms, main complaints, operations, type of endometriosis and planned treatment were analyzed as influencing factors of anxiety in endometriosis patients.

The within-subject variability (WSV) of pain-intensity reports has gained attention as a predictor of the placebo response but has demonstrated mixed results. We hypothesized that participants' inward- and outward-directed attention will moderate WSV's prediction of the analgesic placebo response. In this sham randomized clinical trial (protocol number NCT05994118); placebo response was induced in chronic back-pain patients (n=113) through a saline injection plus verbal suggestion.
