Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a type of interstitial lung disease characterized by unknown causes and a poor prognosis. Recent research indicates that age-related mechanisms, such as cellular senescence, may play a role in the development of this condition. However, the relationship between cellular senescence and clinical outcomes in IPF remains uncertain.

Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFβ1) is the key profibrotic cytokine in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), but the primary source of this cytokine in this disease is unknown. Platelets have abundant stores of TGFβ1, although the role of these cells in IPF is ill-defined. In this study, we investigated whether platelets, and specifically platelet-derived TGFβ1, mediate IPF disease progression.

Background: Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may provide additional and complementary findings for the management of these patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). This study addresses the cytological features of the infection and highlights the more influential inflammatory components. The correlation between pathological variables and clinical data is also analyzed.

Introduction: Blood platelets are increasingly recognized as modulators of leukocyte effector functions in various pathologies including acute lung injury (ALI). ALI is a life-threatening disease, caused by damage to the alveolar epi- and endothelium. Excessive accumulation of leukocytes leads to severe lung inflammation, resulting in impaired lung function and hypoxemia.
