AI Article Synopsis

  • Wulingshen, a medicinal fungus, was first discovered in the Chengdu Plain of western Sichuan, China, and is associated with large sclerotia found in old termite nests.
  • Researchers sequenced 54 samples of Wulingshen from traditional medicine markets, identifying them as belonging to six different species, including two new ones.
  • In Taiwan, teleomorphs (the reproductive stage of fungi) of four out of the six species were found, enabling the formal identification of two species, while a new species collected from termite nests in Chengdu does not have a known link to Wulingshen.

Article Abstract

Wulingshen, massive sclerotia, was originally reported from Chengdu Plain in western Sichuan of China for medicinal application. is commonly connected to these massive sclerotia produced within abandoned underground macrotermitine termite nests. We sequenced 54 Wulingshen samples procured from traditional Chinese medicine markets in Chengdu Plain and connected them to six different species: , two species newly described herein- and , and two species that are known only as sclerotia thus far. Only teleomorphs of and have been collected in Chengdu Plain thus far. In Taiwan, teleomorphs of four of the six species, except for the two only known in sclerotial form, have been collected, and their cultures were obtained; we thus designate the holotypes of and on the basis of Taiwan specimens. During the collecting activities carried out in Chengdu Plain, a species, which is newly described as herein, was also collected from termite nests but lacks a known connection to Wulingshen.

The natural suitability of human settlements is greatly influenced by the distinct ecological environment and natural conditions of the plateau area, which are of great eco-environmental significance. 32 counties in China's Western Sichuan Plateau were chosen as the study's research subjects. The evaluation index system and weight of the natural suitability of human settlements were established, along with the obstacle degree model, using the analytical hierarchy process, the entropy method, and the integrated weight method.

Identifying key factors that control the chemical evolution of groundwater along groundwater flow direction is essential in ensuring the safety of groundwater resources in upper watersheds and lower plains. In this study, the ion ratio, multivariate statistics, and inverse geochemical modeling were used to investigate and explore the chemical characteristics of groundwater and factors driving the formation of groundwater components in the plain area of Deyang City, China. The chemical type of groundwater in the area was dominated by the HCO-Ca type, and the variation in groundwater chemical composition was mainly affected by water-rock interaction and human interference.

Pakistan's geographic location makes it an important land hub between Central Asia, Middle East-North Africa, and China. However, the railways, roads, farmland, riverways, and residential quarters in the Piedmont plains of Baluchistan province in northwestern Pakistan are under serious threat of flooding in the summer of 2022. The urgency and severity of climate change's impact on humanity are underscored by the significant threats posed to human life and property in Piedmont Plains environments through extreme flood events, which has garnered widespread concerns.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been detected in lake ecosystems globally, even in remote areas at high altitudes. Compared to plain lakes with short water change cycles and significant human influence, plateau lakes are primarily tectonic closed or semi-closed lakes with steep terrain. Their long water change cycles lead to an obvious cumulative effect on pollutants.

Groundwater is a critical resource for economic growth and livelihoods in the dense agricultural plains of plateaus. However, contaminations from various sources pose significant threats to groundwater quality. Understanding the sources of groundwater contamination and the mechanisms of hydrochemical control is essential for the sustainable development of agriculturally intensive plains.
