Pd-based catalysts with maximized exposure of active sites, ultrafast electron transport, and cocatalyst-promoted intrinsic activity are highly desirable for the formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR), but their fabrication presents a formidable challenge. For the first time, dynamic self-assembly of adenine has been utilized for growth of ultrasmall, highly dispersed, and clean Pd NPs on pristine graphene. The obtained nanohybrid shows remarkably enhanced FAOR catalytic activity and durability compared to Pd NPs directly grown on pristine graphene and commercial Pd/C. The activity is also among the highest for Pd-based catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance is due to well-dispersed, ultrasmall, and clean Pd NPs intimately grown on pristine graphene offering numerous electrochemically accessible active sites and preserving high intrinsic catalytic activity of Pd, great cocatalytic effect of pristine graphene enhancing CO tolerance and intrinsic activity of Pd, and robust attachment of Pd with high CO tolerance on graphene providing high durability. This study develops a facile, mild, and economical strategy to create pristine graphene supported clean Pd NPs with outstanding FAOR catalytic performance, and also sheds light on the mechanism of dynamically self-assembled adenine-mediated synthesis, which is extendable to fabricate other nanohybrids.

Topological design of π electrons in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) leads to a wealth of magnetic quantum phenomena and exotic quantum phases. Symmetric ZGNRs typically show antiferromagnetically coupled spin-ordered edge states. Eliminating cross-edge magnetic coupling in ZGNRs not only enables the realization of a class of ferromagnetic quantum spin chains, enabling the exploration of quantum spin physics and entanglement of multiple qubits in the one-dimensional limit, but also establishes a long-sought-after carbon-based ferromagnetic transport channel, pivotal for ultimate scaling of GNR-based quantum electronics.

One of the key technical challenges before the widespread adoption of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is increasing the durability of the platinum catalyst layer to meet a target of 8000 operating hours with only a 10% loss of performance. Carbon corrosion, one of the primary mechanisms of degradation in fuel cells, has attracted attention from researchers interested in solving the durability problem. As such, the development of catalyst supports to avoid this issue has been a focus in recent years, with interest in hydrophobic supports such as highly graphitized carbons.

Lattice thermal conductivity and phonon properties of polycrystalline graphene.

Nanoscale Adv

Using the spectral energy density method, we predict the phonon scattering mean lifetimes of polycrystalline graphene (PC-G) having polycrystallinity only along the -axis with seven different misorientation (tilt) angles at room temperature. Contrary to other studies on PC-G samples, our results indicate a strong dependence of the thermal conductivity (TC) on the tilt angles which we attribute to careful preparation of our grain boundaries-based samples without introducing any local strains and ensuring periodic boundary conditions for the supercells along the and axes. We also show that the square of the group velocity components along and axes and the phonon lifetimes are uncorrelated and the phonon density of states are almost the same for all samples with different tilt angles.

Herein, a novel nanocomposite was developed to adjust the textural properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for adsorptive applications. To this end, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (RC) was embedded into MIL-101(Cr) crystals, named RC-ML-x nanocomposites. The prepared nanoadsorbents were thoroughly characterized by different techniques.

Anticorrosion coating with near-infrared light triggered precisely controllable self-healing performances.

Great attentions have been paid to anticorrosion coatings with self-healing performances to enhance its reliability and protection period, but massive challenges still remain for developing a coating with selectively triggered and accurately controllable self-healing behaviors. Herein, by integrating lamellar graphene oxide (GO) into a polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofiber loaded with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) corrosion inhibitors, a composite coating with precisely controllable self-healing capabilities is developed. The coating defects can be remotely and accurately repaired under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation within a very short time.
