In the current work, a monothiol, 3-hydroxy-N-(4-mercaptophenyl) benzamide (HMB) was synthesized via amide coupling of 4-aminothiophenol with 3-hydroxybenzoic acid followed by its self-assembly on the surface of a gold electrode which was confirmed using electrochemical techniques: cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and spectroscopic techniques: AFM and FT-IR. Further, HMB functionalized gold electrode (HMB-Au) was utilised as a platform for impedimetric sensing in the presence of one-electron reversible redox probe, [Fe(CN)] and found to show sensitivity towards Ag over a wide linear concentration range from 1 × 10 M to 1 × 10 M (r = 0.99 ± 0.005) at pH = 8 with a detection limit of 3.60 × 10 M. Furthermore, HMB self-assembled Au nanoparticles (HMB-AuNPs) were incorporated as modifier to construct a carbon paste electrode (CPE) for potentiometric detection of Ag. Ag-CPE exhibited a Nernstian slope of 61.70 ± 0.02 mV per decade in the concentration range of 1.0 × 10 M - 1.0 × 10 M (r = 0.99 ± 0.01) with a detection limit of 4.46 × 10 M and a short response time of 15 s. Both HMB based EIS sensor and CPE have shown an acceptable selectivity towards silver(I) ions and successfully applied for estimation of silver(I) content in various samples of water and packaged food products.

Carbon-based light addressable potential aptasensor based on the synergy of C-MXene@rGO and OPD@NGQDs for low-density lipoprotein detection.

Mikrochim Acta

December 2024

School of Life and Environmental Sciences, School of Intellectual Property, Guilin University of Electronic Technology, Guilin, Guangxi, 541004, People's Republic of China.

A novel carbon-based light-addressable potentiometric aptasensor (C-LAPS) was constructed for detection low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in serum. Carboxylated TiC MXene @reduced graphene oxide (C-MXene@rGO) was used as interface and o-phenylenediamine functionalized nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (OPD@NGQDs) as the photoelectric conversion element. The photosensitive layers composed of OPD@NGQDs/C-MXene@rGO exhibit superior photoelectric conversion efficiency and excellent biocompatibility, which contribute to an improved response signal.

In recent years, wearable sweat sensors have garnered significant attention for real-time monitoring of human physiological information because of their ability to continuously and non-invasively detect multiple sweat biomarkers. Among these, potentiometric sensors stand out for their low power consumption, low cost, compact design, and real-time monitoring capabilities, making them an ideal alternative for sweat analysis. However, enhancing the sensitivity of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), a critical parameter of potentiometric sensors, remains a challenging research focus.

This study developed potentiometric sensors for detecting lurasidone HCl (LSH), a vital drug for treating schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder, in pharmaceutical formulations and biological samples. The sensors are based on screen-printed electrodes (SPE) modified with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) synthesized using lurasidone as a template, 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidine (VP) as a functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinker, and benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. The SPE was further modified with a conductive polyaniline (PANI) film and a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) layer containing MIP as an ionophore and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as a transducing material along with 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (2-NPOE) as plasticizer.

Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics, AGH University of Krakow, Mickiewicza 30, PL-30059, Krakow, Poland. Electronic address:

The application of carbon soot as a solid-contact layer in potentiometric sensor is presented. The preparation method of carbon layer from the candle is inexpensive and as short as 10 s and was optimized and described in the scope of this paper. With the use of the proposed procedure, it is possible to cover not only the glassy carbon disc electrodes, but all surfaces of various shapes and types, like foil or paper.

Improved Sensitivity of a Taste Sensor Composed of Trimellitic Acids for Sweetness.

Molecules

November 2024

Research and Development Center for Five-Sense Devices, Kyushu University, 744 Motooka, Nishi-ku, Fukuoka 819-0395, Japan.

Currently, lipid/polymer membranes are used in taste sensors to quantify food taste. This research aims to improve sweetness sensors by more selectively detecting uncharged sweetening substances, which have difficulty obtaining a potentiometric response. Lipid/polymer membranes with varying amounts of tetradodecylammonium bromide (TDAB) and 1,2,4-benzene tricarboxylic acid (trimellitic acid) were prepared.
