Emulsification-diffusion method is often used to produce polymeric nanoparticles. However, their numerous and/or lengthy steps make it difficult to use widely. Thus, a modified method using solvent blends (miscible/partially miscible in water, 25-100%) as the organic phases to overcome these disadvantages and its design space were investigated. To further simplify the process, no organic/aqueous phase saturation and no water addition after the emulsification step were performed. Biodegradable (PLGA) or pH-sensitive (Eudragit E100) nanoparticles were robustly produced using low/medium shear stirring adding dropwise the organic phase into the aqueous phase or vice versa. Several behaviors were also obtained: lowering the partially water-miscible solvent ratio relative to the organic phase or the poloxamer-407 concentration; or increasing the organic phase polarity or the polyvinyl alcohol concentration produced smaller particle sizes/polydispersity. Nanoparticle zeta potential increased as the water-miscible solvent ratio increased. Poloxamer-407 showed better performance to decrease the particle size (~50 nm) at low concentrations (≤1%, /) compared with polyvinyl alcohol at 1-5% (/), but higher concentrations produced bigger particles/polydispersity (≥600 nm). Most important, an inverse linear correlation to predict the particle size by determining the solubility parameter was found. A rapid method to broadly prepare nanoparticles using straightforward equipment is provided.

Identifying facile strategies for hierarchically structuring crystalline porous materials is critical for realizing diffusion length scales suitable for broad applications. Here, we elucidate synthesis-structure-function relations governing how room temperature catalytic conditions can be exploited to tune covalent organic framework (COF) growth and thereby access unique hierarchical morphologies without the need to introduce secondary templates or structure directing molecules. Specifically, we demonstrate how scandium triflate, an efficient catalyst involved in the synthesis of imine-based COFs, can be exploited as an effective growth modifier capable of selectively titrating terminal amines on 2D COF layers to facilitate anisotropic crystal growth.

The development of photoresponsive ferroelastics, which couple light-induced macroscopic mechanical and microscopic domain properties, represents a frontier in materials science with profound implications for advanced functional applications. In this study, we report the rational design and synthesis of two new organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelastic crystals, (MA)(MeN)[Fe(CN)(NO)] (MA = methylammonium) () and (MA)(MeNOH)[Fe(CN)(NO)] (), using a dual-organic molecular design strategy that exploits hydrogen-bonding interactions for tailoring ferroelastic properties. Specifically, exhibits a two-step phase transition at 138 and 242 K, while the introduction of a hydroxyl group in stabilizes its ferroelastic phase to a significantly higher temperature, achieving a phase transition at 328 K, 86 K above that of .

Achieving dynamic multicolor emission through solid-state molecular motion is of significant importance for advancing applications in organic solid-state luminescent materials. Herein, we report macrocycle crystals with unique forward‒ and retro‒vapofluorochromic behavior, which is realized by reversible amine vapor uptake and amine‒"squeeze" induced guest release. The forward‒vapofluorochromism occurs when aliphatic amines penetrate guest-free macrocycle crystals to form host‒guest complex crystals.

Filamentous fungi are a cornerstone in the biotechnological production of enzymes, proteins, and organic acids. However, challenges in understanding and controlling the relationship between morphology and productivity can limit their application. This study addresses these challenges using Thermothelomyces thermophilus, a promising thermophilic fungus known for the production of thermostable enzymes.

Herein, an amino-functionalized covalent organic framework was synthesized and accommodated in the pores of porous hollow fiber. In this context, tetra (4-aminophenyl) porphyrin was synthesized for preparing the desired covalent organic framework as the extracting sorbent and employed for hollow fiber solid-phase microextraction of tebuconazole and propiconazole. With respect to the amino groups of the as-synthesized porphyrin-based covalent organic framework, the extracting device has the ability of establishing a hydrogen bond with the selected model analytes.
