Adaptiveness is an important feature for biological creatures to survive and interact with variable environments. Mechanically adaptive polymers (MAPs), which have been developed recently inspired by this adaptive nature, can regulate their mechanical properties in response to external stimuli or environmental changes. Specifically, MAPs based on dynamic chemical bonds have been synthesized and reported as an emerging material because of the intrinsic self-adaptability, outstanding mechanical properties and durable applications.

This review examines the recent advancements and unique properties of polymer-inorganic hybrid materials formed through coordination bonding (Class II hybrids), which enable enhanced functionality and stability across various applications. Here, we categorize these materials based on properties gained through complexation, focusing on electrical conductivity, thermal stability, photophysical characteristics, catalytic activity, and nanoscale self-assembly. Two major synthetic approaches to making these hybrids include homogeneous and heterogeneous methods, each with distinct tradeoffs: Homogeneous synthesis is straightforward but requires favorable mixing between inorganic and polymer species, which are predominantly water-soluble complexes.

Inclusion of gold ions in tiara-like nickel hexanuclear nanoclusters.

Nanoscale

Tiara-like metal nanoclusters (TNCs) composed of group 10 transition metals and thiolates can easily change their number of polymerization and include various molecules or metal ions as guests within their ring structures. Therefore, they are expected to be applied in sensing, storage, and catalyst materials based on their selective inclusion characteristics. However, there are very few reports regarding the principles of selective inclusion for guest molecules/ions in TNCs.

Rational exploration of cost-effective, durable, and high-performance electrode materials is imperative for advancing the progress of capacitive deionization (CDI). The integration of multicomponent layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with conjugated conductive metal-organic frameworks (c-MOFs) to fabricate bifunctional heterostructure electrode materials is considered a complex but promising strategy. Herein, the fabrication of elaborately designed three-dimensional hierarchical conductive MOF/LDH/CF nanoarchitectures (M-CAT/LDH/CF) as CDI anodes via a controllable grafted-growth strategy is reported.
