Maxwell's demon is an entity in a 150-year-old thought experiment that paradoxically appears to violate the second law of thermodynamics by reducing entropy without doing work. It has increasingly practical implications as advances in nanomachinery produce devices that push the thermodynamic limits imposed by the second law. A well-known explanation claiming that information erasure restores second law compliance fails to resolve the paradox because it assumes the second law , and does not predict irreversibility. Instead, a purely mechanical resolution that does not require information theory is presented. The transport fluxes of mass, momentum, and energy involved in the demon's operation are analyzed and show that they imply "hidden" external work and dissipation. Computing the dissipation leads to a new lower bound on entropy production by the demon. It is strictly positive in all nontrivial cases, providing a more stringent limit than the second law and implying intrinsic thermodynamic irreversibility. The thermodynamic irreversibility is linked with mechanical irreversibility resulting from the spatial asymmetry of the demon's speed selection criteria, indicating one mechanism by which macroscopic irreversibility may emerge from microscopic dynamics.

Aiming at the control challenges faced by unmanned surface vessels (USVs) in complex environments, such as nonlinearities, parameter uncertainties, and environmental perturbations, we propose a non-singular terminal integral sliding mode control strategy based on an extended state observer (ESO). The strategy first employs a third-order linear extended state observer to estimate the total disturbances of the USV system, encompassing both external disturbances and internal nonlinearities. Subsequently, a backstepping sliding mode controller based on the Lyapunov theory is designed to generate the steering torque control commands for the USV.

T700 Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Resin Composite Material Hygrothermal Aging Model.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Institute of Process Equipment, College of Energy Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310007, China.

The hygrothermal aging model, based on Fick's second law of diffusion, characterizes the degradation of engineering constants in T700 carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites. It focuses on changes in the tensile modulus, shear modulus, and transverse Poisson's ratio due to moisture absorption and temperature variations. The model validates through mass change observations before and after seawater immersion, along with surface morphology assessments and tensile experiments.

Inertial Memory Effects in Molecular Transport Across Nanoporous Membranes.

Membranes (Basel)

Nanoporous membranes are heterogeneous structures, with heterogeneity manifesting at the microscale. In examining particle transport through such media, it has been observed that this transport deviates from classical diffusion, as described by Fick's second law. Moreover, the classical model is physically unsustainable, as it is non-causal and predicts an infinite speed of concentration perturbation propagation through a substantial medium.

The Second Law of Infodynamics: A Thermocontextual Reformulation.

Entropy (Basel)

December 2024

Independent Researcher, Leesburg, VA 20176, USA.

Vopson and Lepadatu recently proposed the Second Law of Infodynamics. The law states that while the total entropy increases, information entropy declines over time. They state that the law has applications over a wide range of disciplines, but they leave many key questions unanswered.

Objective: Although bedrails are considered a restraint measure under the legal regulations in Spain, no data on the related perceptions of healthcare professionals (HCPs) are available. Thus, this study aimed to calculate the proportion of HCPs in the hospital setting that consider bedrails to be a restraint measure.

Methods: Between June and December 2022, a cross-sectional online survey was conducted among the HCPs at our institution.
