This study focuses on the impact of infiltration rates on colloidal transport and reactive processes associated with Enterococcus faecalis JH2-2 using water-saturated sediment columns. The infiltration rates influence the physical transport of bacteria by controlling the mean flow velocity. This, in turn, impacts biological processes in pore water owing to the higher or lower residence time of the bacteria in the column. In the present study, continuous injection of E. faecalis (suspended in saline water with varying conditions of dissolved oxygen and nutrient concentrations) into a lab-scale sediment column was performed at flow velocities of 0.02 cm min and 0.078 cm min, i.e., at residence times of 1-5 hours. The impact of residence times on reactive processes is significant for field scale setups. A process-based model with a first-order rate coefficient for each biological process was fitted for each obtained condition-specific dataset from the experimental observations (breakthrough curves). The coefficients were converted to a dimensionless form to facilitate the comparison of biological processes. These results indicate that the processes of attachment and growth were flow-dependent. The growth process in the absence of dissolved oxygen was the most dominant process, with a Damkoehler number of approximately 48.

Introduction: Although photodynamic therapy (PDT) shows considerable potential for cancer treatment due to its precise spatial control and reduced toxicity, effectively eliminating residual cells under hypoxic conditions remains challenging because of the resistance conferred by these cells.
Methods: Herein, we synthesize an amphiphilic PEGylated polyphosphoester and present a nanocarrier (NP) specifically designed for the codelivery of hydrophobic photosensitizer (chlorin e6, Ce6) and hypoxia-activated prodrugs (tirapazamine, TPZ). We investigate the antitumor effect of NP on both cellular and animal level.

This study aimed to evaluate different combinations of three dietary supplements for potential additive or synergistic effects in an Parkinson's Disease model. The complex and diverse processes leading to neurodegeneration in each patient with a neurodegenerative disorder cannot be effectively addressed by a single medication. Instead, various combinations of potentially neuroprotective agents targeting different disease mechanisms simultaneously may show improved additive or synergistic efficacy in slowing the disease progression and allowing the agents to be utilized at lower doses to minimize side effects.

OxLDL is increased during aging and stimulates monocyte transformation into foam cells and induces metabolic reprogramming and pro-inflammatory responses, accelerating atherosclerosis progression and contributing to other age-related diseases. This study investigated the effects of Mdivi-1, a mitochondrial fission inhibitor, and S1QEL, a selective complex I-associated reactive oxygen species (ROS) inhibitor, on OxLDL-induced responses in monocytes.

Pathogenic bacteria trigger complex molecular interactions in hosts that are characterized mainly by an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as an inflammation-associated response. To counteract oxidative damage, cells respond through protective mechanisms to promote resistance and avoid tissue damage and infection; among these cellular mechanisms the activation or inhibition of the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is frequently observed. The transcription factor Nrf2 is considered the regulator of several hundred cytoprotective and antioxidant genes.

Ferroptosis, distinct from apoptosis, is primarily characterized by the accumulation of iron-dependent lipid peroxides (LPO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This process plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of various diseases and has recently emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy in oncology, garnering significant attention. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs), serve as crucial regulators in numerous biological processes, particularly in cancer initiation and progression.
