To achieve degradable, anti-biofouling coatings with longer lifetimes and better mechanical properties, we synthesized a series of degradable co-polyesters composed of cyclic ketene acetals, di-(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate, and a photoactive curing agent, 4-benzoylphenyl methacrylate, using a radical ring-opening polymerization. The precursor co-polyesters were spin-coated on a benzophenone-functionalized silicon wafer to form ca. 60 nm films and drop-casted on glass to form ∼32 μm films. The copolymers were cross-linked via UV irradiation at 365 nm. The degradation of films was studied by immersing the specimens in aqueous buffers of different pH values. The results show that both the pH of buffer solutions and gel fractions of networks affect the degradation rate. The coatings show good bovine serum albumin resistance capability. By adjusting the fractions of monomers, the degradation rate and degree of hydration (e.g., swelling ratio) are controllable.

3,4-Dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine (DOPA) serves as a post-translational modification amino acid present in mussel foot proteins. Mussels exploit the exceptional adhesive properties of DOPA to adhere to a wide range of surfaces. This study presents the development of sticky proteins and bacteria through the site-specific incorporation of DOPA using Genetic Code Expansion Technology.

Inhibiting the adhesion and growth of marine microorganisms through photocatalysis is a potentially efficient and environmentally friendly antifouling strategy. However, the undesired "shading effect" caused by resin coatings and microbial deposition reduces the utilization of the catalysts and leads to a failure in the antifouling active substance on the coating surface. Here, we successfully developed a composite coating (DPC-) combining g-CN nanosheet (g-C-NS) photocatalysts with degradable green poly-Schiff base resins, which integrates the dual functions of enhanced dynamic self-renewal and photocatalytic antibacterial activities towards long-term anti-biofouling.

Surface chemistry of carriers plays a key role in enzyme loading capacity, structure rigidity, and thus catalyze activity of immobilized enzymes. In this work, the two model enzymes of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and glucose oxidase (GOx) are co-immobilized on the lysozyme functionalized magnetic core-shell nanocomposites (LYZ@MCSNCs) to enhance their stability and activity. Briefly, the HRP and GOx aggregates are firstly formed under the crosslinker of trimesic acid, in which the loading amount and the rigidity of the enzyme can be further increased.

This study addresses membrane biofouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) by exploring fungal-to-bacterial quorum quenching (QQ) strategies. While most research has been focused on bacterial-to-bacterial QQ tactics, this study identified fungal strain Vanrija sp. MS1, which is capable of degrading N-acyl-homoserine lactones (signaling molecules of Gram-negative bacteria).
