Stabilizing the hazardous calcium arsenic residues (CAR) and monitoring the subsequent fate of arsenic (As) are critical to reduce its risk to the environment. In this work, a novel in situ method has been proposed to stabilize CAR by adding Fe solution and subsequent formation of the secondary mineral (yukonite). The experiments were conducted at pH 6-9 with different Fe/As molar ratios (0.28-0.66) and the solid phases were characterized by using X-ray diffraction and scanning/transmission electron microscopy. Results showed that the stability of the CAR was significantly increased after the addition of Fe solution, indicating good fixation effectiveness. The dissolved As concentration in the treated CAR samples continuously decreased to <5 mg/L after 490 days of treatment at Fe/As molar ratio ≥ 0.54 and pH ≥ 8, with the leached As concentration lower than 5 mg/L (US EPA standard) for most of the treated CAR in the TCLP and HVM tests. The formation of yukonite under different experimental conditions is closely related to the enhanced stability of the treated CAR. This work provides a novel in situ method to treat CAR which might have potential for future industrial applications.

Cotreatment strategy for hazardous arsenic-calcium residue and siderite tailings via arsenic fixation as scorodite.

J Environ Sci (China)

Siderite tailings is a potentially cost-free iron (Fe) source for arsenic (As) fixation in hazardous arsenic-calcium residues (ACR) as stable scorodite. In this study, a pure siderite reagent was employed to investigate the mechanism and optimal conditions for As fixation in ACR via scorodite formation, while the waste siderite tailings were used to further demonstrate the cotreatment method. The cotreatment method starts with an introduction of sulfuric acid to the ACR for As extraction and gypsum precipitation, and is followed by the addition of HO to oxidize As(III) in the extraction solutions and finalized by adding siderite with continuous air injection for scorodite formation.

As a typical ecologically fragile area, the Wudong Coal Mine region in Xinjiang generates large accumulations of coal gangue each year, which, in the alkaline soil environment, can easily lead to significant leaching and accumulation of As. This study developed a stabilizer (CFD) using cement, fly ash, and desulfurized gypsum to modify in-situ soil in the Xinjiang mining area, resulting in a modified solidified soil with excellent geotechnical performance and As stabilization capability. The study results showed that when CFD content exceeded 14.

Combined effects of climate stressors and soil arsenic contamination on metabolic profiles and productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Rice productivity and quality are increasingly at risk in arsenic (As) affected areas, challenge that is expected to worsen under changing climatic conditions. Free-Air Concentration Enrichment experiments revealed that eCO, eO, and eTemp, whether acting individually or in combination with low and high As irrigation, significantly impact rice yield and grain quality. Elevated CO₂ significantly increased shoot biomass, with minimal impact on root biomass, except under low As irrigation conditions.

Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) is a chronic, multifactorial, and progressive neurodegenerative disease that associates with aging and is highly prevalent in our older population (≥65 years of age). This hypothesis generating this narrative review will examine the important role for the use of sodium thiosulfate (STS) as a possible multi-targeting treatment option for LOAD. Sulfur is widely available in our environment and is responsible for forming organosulfur compounds that are known to be associated with a wide range of biological activities in the brain.

Influence of calcium carbonate on ferrihydrite bio-transformation and associated arsenic mobilization/redistribution.

The sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB)-induced ferrihydrite transformation is an important cause for arsenic (As) contamination in the aquifer near mining area. Calcium carbonate (CaCO) is widespread and has the potential of regulating As fate directly or indirectly. However, the influence of CaCO on ferrihydrite transformation and the associated As mobilization/redistribution in SRB-containing environments remains unclear.
