Protective Strategies for Pituitary Function During Endoscopic Transnasal Pituitary Adenoma Surgery: A Single-center Experience.

J Craniofac Surg

November 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Pituitary Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Research Center, The First Affiliated Hospital Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, Shenzhen, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined the effects of endoscopic transnasal pituitary adenoma surgery on pituitary function and aimed to identify factors that influence postoperative outcomes.
  • - An analysis of 306 patients' data revealed varying rates of postoperative hypopituitarism among different hormone axes, with the pituitary-thyroid and adrenal axes showing higher incidence rates post-surgery.
  • - Results indicated that larger tumors (giant adenomas) had a significantly greater impact on adrenal function, while no substantial difference in new hypopituitarism rates was observed after surgery between different tumor sizes.

In mammals, the central circadian oscillator is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis components exhibit circadian oscillation, regulated by both central clock innervation and intrinsic circadian clocks in the anterior pituitary and thyroid glands. Thyroid disorders alter the rhythmicity of peripheral clocks in a tissue-dependent response; however, whether these effects are influenced by alterations in the master clock remains unknown.

Minipuberty in Daughters of Women with Hypothyroidism during Pregnancy.

Int J Mol Sci

July 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Villa Sofia Cervello Hospital, University of Palermo, 90146 Palermo, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • - Minipuberty refers to a brief period after birth when the hormones influencing female reproductive organs become active, important for growth in genital organs and breasts.
  • - This study examined how maternal thyroid issues during pregnancy affect minipuberty in infant girls by comparing three groups: those whose mothers had untreated thyroid problems, those whose mothers were treated properly, and those born to healthy mothers.
  • - Findings revealed that girls from untreated or inadequately treated mothers showed lower hormone levels and smaller reproductive organ sizes compared to those from adequately treated mothers and healthy mothers, suggesting that untreated hypothyroidism in pregnancy can negatively affect female offspring's minipuberty.

Aim: 99mTc-Methoxy-Isobuty-Isonitrile (MIBI) imaging is used for risk stratifications of hypofunctioning thyroid nodules (TNs). MIBI uptake in the nodular tissue is compared to the uptake in the paranodular thyroid tissue. MIBI imaging may be interpreted visually and/or semi-quantitatively.

Thyroid dysfunction and diabetes mellitus are prevalent endocrine disorders that often coexist and influence each other. The role of spexin (SPX) in diabetes and obesity is well documented, but its connection to thyroid function is less understood. This study investigates the influence of exercise (EX) and SPX on thyroid hypofunction in obese type 2 diabetic rats.
