Authors studied the fine structural characteristics of the neuromuscular junctions in the alimentary tract of phylogenetically different animal species. Nearly in each studied species the so-called close contacts were observable, where the sarcolemma and axolemma establish a junction; the gap of this contact is 10-100 nm wide, and the neurotransmitters can affect the muscles through non-synaptic release (exocytosis). The junctional gap is widest in the gut wall of earthworm: 100-200 nm. Only close contacts are to be found in the alimentary canal of snail, and here, the junctional gap is as narrow as 10-15 nm. Beside close contacts synaptic neuromuscular junctions also occur in the locust gut. Their fine structural organization refer to that of chemical synapses. As in the tench intestine both striated and smooth muscular elements can be found, motor endplates as well as close contacts take part in their innervation. Only close contacts are in the smooth muscular layer of domestic fowl. Authors emphasize the role of close contacts in the regulation of gut peristalsis and only secondary importance is attached to other different junctions.

Comparative studies on the development of nervous systems have a significant impact on understanding animal nervous system evolution. Nevertheless, an important question is to what degree neuronal structures, which play an important role in early stages, become part of the adult nervous system or are relevant for its formation. This is likely in many direct developers, but it is not the case in forms with catastrophic metamorphosis.

Our qualitative study in Zambia explored the acceptability and preferences for designing TB active case finding (ACF) strategies to reach non-household contacts of people with TB.
Methods: We conducted 56 in-depth interviews with persons with TB ( = 12), TB healthcare workers (HCWs) ( = 10), TB lay HCWs ( = 10), and leaders/owners ( = 12) and attendees ( = 12) of community venue types identified as potential TB transmission locations.

This case report presents an atypical transverse cervical artery with its detailed anatomy, morphogenesis, and association with the high arch-shaped subclavian artery. The atypical arteries, related arteries, and adjacent cervical and brachial plexuses were macroscopically examined in a 98-year-old Japanese female cadaver donated to The Nippon Dental University for medical education and research. The atypical deep branch of the transverse cervical artery originated from the internal thoracic artery and passed through between the C5 and C6 roots, in close contact with the C5 and C6 junction, to reach the dorsal side of the brachial plexus.

Research shows heterogeneity in experiences of social contact and social networks in autistic adults. In this study, we aim to identify clusters of social support networks and investigate associations of clusters with mastery, quality of life, and autism characteristics. Autistic adults (N = 381; 45.

To reliably operate anode-less solid-state Li metal batteries, wherein precipitated Li acts as the anode, stabilizing the interface between the solid electrolyte and electrode is crucial. The interface can be controlled by a metal interlayer on the electrolyte to form a Li alloy buffer that facilitates stable Li plating/stripping, thereby mitigating the loss of physical contact and preventing short circuits. However, the mechanism governing stable Li plating/stripping in the metal interlayer without degrading battery materials remains unclear owing to an incomplete understanding of the dynamic and complex electrochemical reactions in the solid state.
