Wood is highly regarded as the most sustainable resource that is widely used in structural applications. To extend its practicality in electrically conductive applications, it is necessary to confer electrical conductivity to the insulating wood. The most common strategy is to derive carbonized wood powder via an annealing process. Even though these carbonized wood powders are electrically conductive, they lost the ancestry characteristic of wood, that is, excellent mechanical properties. As such, it is of great importance to realize the concept of conductive wood while at the same time maintaining or even enhancing its mechanical properties further. By leveraging on the naturally formed transportation channels found in trees, conductive particles can be aligned along these ordered channels. To substitute active transport in living plants, a vacuum pressure impregnation process was used to infiltrate these conductive particles into the transportation channels. As a result, Cu/wood composite, denoted as Cu-SW, exhibited a minimum volume resistivity of 1.366 × 10 Ω cm, which was lower than those of conventional semiconductors. High Cu loading of ∼43.1 volume % of the final product, Cu-SW, was achieved with such technique, which clearly indicates the ability to achieve deep penetration of Cu nanoparticles into the bulk wood. Furthermore, an encouraging mechanical properties improvement of ∼50% was recorded for Cu-SW as compared to the wood matrix. With the enhancement in both conductivity and mechanical properties, Cu-SW could be used in load-bearing application that requires electrical conduction.

The approaches used to determine the medicinal properties of the plants are often destructive, labor-intensive, time-consuming, and expensive, making it impossible to analyze their quality analysis online. Performance of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) integrated with intelligent techniques to overcome these problems was investigated in this research. For this purpose, three classification methods-support vector machine, random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting-were studied for the classification of plants in three classes of medicinal, edible, and ornamental for the organs of leaf, stem, flower, and root.

Chitosan (CHT) is a known piezoelectric biomacromolecule; however, its usage is limited due to rapid degradation in an aqueous system. Herein, we prepared CHT film via a solvent casting method and cross-linked in an alkaline solution. Sodium hydroxide facilitated deprotonation, leading to increased intramolecular hydrogen bonding and mechanical properties.

Bone cement is commonly utilized to secure prosthetic joints in the body because of its robust fixation, stability, biocompatibility, and immediate load-bearing capability. However, issues such as loosening, leakage, and insufficient bioactivity can lead to its failure. Therefore, improving its mechanical, physical, and biological properties is crucial for enhancing its efficiency.

The suitability of a range of interatomic potentials for elemental tin was evaluated in order to identify an appropriate potential for modeling the stanene (2D tin) allotropes. Structural and mechanical features of the flat (F), low-buckled (LB), high-buckled (HB), full dumbbell (FD), trigonal dumbbell (TD), honeycomb dumbbell (HD), and large honeycomb dumbbell (LHD) monolayer tin (stanene) phases, were gained by means of the density functional theory (DFT) and molecular statics (MS) calculations with ten different Tersoff, modified embedded atom method (MEAM), and machine-learning-based (ML-IAP) interatomic potentials. A systematic quantitative comparison and discussion of the results is reported.

The high content of vitamin E, including tocopherols and tocotrienols (TCF-TTE), in palm oil () has made it a promising candidate for the alternative treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the limited solubility of TCF-TTE has restricted its therapeutic efficacy. In this study, pluronic-based micelles (MCs) encapsulating palm oil-derived TCF-TTE were formulated with dissolvable microarray patch-micelles (DMP-MC) using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) synthesized from empty fruit bunches of palm to optimize its delivery for AD.
