Purpose: To compare the effect of botulinum toxin injection (BTX) to bilateral medial rectus recession (BMR) in partially accommodative esotropia (PAET).
Methods: The medical records of children 1-14 years of age treated for PAET with BMR or BTX between 2010 and 2020 at a single institution were reviewed retrospectively. PAET was defined as residual esotropia of at least 14 after 6 weeks of continuous wear of full cycloplegic refraction (> +2.5 D). Success was defined as esotropia of 0-10 after a single surgery or ≥1 BTX injections.
Results: Of 224 patients, 121 received BTX and 103 underwent BMR. BMR showed a higher success rate than BTX (70.9% vs 53.7% [P = 0.006]). BMR was more successful in males, in patients >5 years of age, and when spherical equivalent was ≤ +5.00 D (79.2%, 74.3%, and 67.5%, resp. [P < 0.05]). Mean follow-up was shorter in the BMR group than in the BTX group (16.7 ± 14.7 vs 31.4 ± 29.5 months [P = 0.0001]). Mean duration of surgery was significantly shorter in the BTX group (5.2 ± 4.3 vs 70.5 ± 31.4 min [P = 0.0001]). Postoperative inferior oblique overaction was more common in the BTX group (7.4%; P = 0.02 [Fisher exact test]), and persistent ptosis was only seen in the BTX group (0.8%); consecutive exotropia was only seen in the BMR group (2%).
Conclusions: In our study cohort, BMR had a higher success rate than BTX. Conventional surgery allowed for shorter follow-up and fewer complications than BTX in the treatment of PAET.

Introduction: Botulinum toxin is an alternative to conventional strabismus surgery for treatment for acute, acquired, comitant esotropia (AACE). Previous studies suggest that the two treatment approaches may be equally effective for 6 months. The purpose of our study was to determine whether botulinum toxin remains as effective as strabismus surgery for 36 months after treatment.

Aromatic π-complexes play a significant role in various chemical and biological systems, significantly influencing their physico-chemical and spectroscopic properties. The identification of new compounds capable of π-complex formation is therefore of great interest. The paper investigates the fluorescent properties of 1,5-diisocyanonaphthalene (1,5-DIN) in different aromatic solvents, demonstrating its potential for distinguishing between aromatics based on emission spectra.

Purpose: We aimed to investigate early effects of regulating alpha‑7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) agonists and antagonists on maxillary expansion in mice.
Methods: We allocated 36 six-week-old male C57BL/6J mice into three group: 1) expansion alone, 2) expansion plus the α7nAChR-specific agonist 3‑(2,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)-anabaseine dihydrochloride (GTS-21), and 3) expansion plus alpha-bungarotoxin (α-BTX), a competitive antagonist of α7nAChR. The groups were daily injected with saline, GTS-21 (4 mg/kg/day) or α‑BTX (1 mg/kg/day), respectively, from days 0-7.

This review evaluates the risks and benefits of botulinum toxin (BTX) therapy for treating bromhidrosis. A search was conducted across six databases, including clinical trials comparing BTX therapy with BTX-free controls. The analyzed outcomes included pooled adverse events (AEs), treatment success, ≥ 50% overall improvement, and recurrence rates.

Benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) are priority pollutants known for their hematotoxicity and carcinogenic properties. Benzene is further metabolized to phenyl mercapturic acid (PMA), toluene and xylene also generate benzyl mercapturic acid (BMA) in human urine. To confirm whether the exposure to benzene series comes from the workplace or from the external environment such as smoking is a very meaningful work, so accurate measurement of their biomarkers in biological samples is crucial.
