Sjogren's disease (SjD) is a chronic and disabling autoimmune disease, predominantly characterized by dryness of the mouth and eyes, resulting from lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands. While these are the most prominent symptoms, extra-glandular manifestations are also common. Studies suggest that up to 70% of SjD patients experience neurological symptoms, which interestingly often precede the hallmark dryness.

Purpose: Liver and lung metastases demonstrate distinct biological, particularly immunological, characteristics. We investigated whether preoperative complete blood count (CBC) parameters, which may reflect the immune system condition, predict early dissemination to the liver and lungs in colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: In this retrospective single-centre study, we included 268 resected CRC cases with complete 2-year follow-up and analysed preoperative CBC for association with early liver or lung metastasis development.

Novel Sarcoidosis Epitope Augments MHCII, CD80/CD86 Expression, Promotes B-Cell Differentiation and IgG Production.

Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol

January 2025

Wayne State University, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Detroit, Michigan, United States;

Numerous chronic human disorders are associated with immune activation by obscure antigen(s). We identified a novel sarcoidosis-epitope (ChainA) by immunoscreening of a novel T7 phage library and confirmed an abundance of ChainA IgG-antibody in sarcoidosis. We tested whether ChainA epitope elicits immune responses through B-cell activation, plasma cell differentiation and antibody production.

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio at diagnosis predicts colonoscopic activity in pediatric inflammatory bowel diseases (pIBD).

Clin Transl Gastroenterol

January 2025

Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Background: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a novel biomarker studied in several autoimmune diseases including inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in adults, but poorly characterized in pediatric IBD (pIBD). We aimed to primarily investigate the relationship between NLR and pIBD endoscopic disease severity. We also examined whether NLR predicted hospitalization, surgery, and therapy response by 52 weeks.

Establishment and Validation of a Machine-Learning Prediction Nomogram Based on Lymphocyte Subtyping for Intra-Abdominal Candidiasis in Septic Patients.

Clin Transl Sci

January 2025

Department of Critical Care Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram based on lymphocyte subtyping and clinical factors for the early and rapid prediction of Intra-abdominal candidiasis (IAC) in septic patients. A prospective cohort study of 633 consecutive patients diagnosed with sepsis and intra-abdominal infection (IAI) was performed. We assessed the clinical characteristics and lymphocyte subsets at the onset of IAI.
