With the long-term widespread overuse of antibiotics, a large number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria have emerged and become a serious threat to healthcare systems. As an alternative strategy, near-infrared light (NIR)-actuated photothermal treatment has been developed for killing antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Although promising, the widespread applications of photothermal antibacterial platforms face great challenges due to the skin-harmful high laser irradiation. In this work, a novel NIR-responsive hydrogel membrane for effective photothermal sterilization upon light irradiation at skin-permissible intensity has been successfully prepared using a sodium alginate-based hydrogel membrane containing tannic acid-Fe(III) compounds (STF). The as-prepared STF displayed excellent mechanical capacity and fabricability. More importantly, the as-prepared STF revealed superior photothermal efficiency under a low-intensity NIR irradiation (0.3 W cm), which was below the maximum permissible exposure of skin (0.33 W cm). In addition, the STF showed the excellent performance of photothermal sterilization for MRSA both and . Furthermore, the STF showed good biocompatibility. Based on the simple synthesis method, outstanding mechanical properties, excellent photothermal sterilization performance and good biocompatibility, the STF could be a promising wound dressing for antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.

Background: Widespread bacterial infection and the spread of multidrug resistance (MDR) exhibit increasing threats to the public and thus require new antibacterial strategies. Coupled with the current slow pace of antibiotic development, the use of antibiotic adjuvants to revitalize existing antibiotics offers great potential.
Purpose: We aim to explore the synergistic antimicrobial mechanism of glabrol (GLA) and colistin (COL) while developing an innovative multifunctional micelle-based drug delivery system to enhance therapeutic efficacy.

This study explores improving proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) by achieving both cost-effectiveness and enhanced efficiency through the replacement of the costly and environmentally challenging Nafion ionomer with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as an anode binder. HPMC, an eco-friendly and cost-effective material, was cross-linked with citric acid to form a durable hydrogel that enhances water and proton transport within the catalyst layer. Using the cross-linked HPMC binder allowed a reduction in cost to 1/54 compared to Nafion ionomer, while the performance of the cross-linked HPMC electrodes remained comparable to Nafion electrodes.

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are a promising target for research due to their small size and the resulting plasmonic properties, which depend, among other things, on the chosen reducer. This is important because removing excess substrate from the reaction mixture is problematic. However, Au NPs are an excellent component of various materials, enriching them with their unique features.

: The barrier properties of the human small intestine play a crucial role in regulating digestion, nutrient absorption and drug metabolism. Current in vitro organotypic models consist only of an epithelium, which does not take into account the possible role of stromal cells such as fibroblasts or the extracellular matrix (ECM) which could contribute to epithelial barrier properties. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether these stromal cells or ECM were beneficial or detrimental to barrier function when incorporated into an organotypic human small intestine model.
