The extraction of proanthocyanidins (PACs), despite being an important and limiting aspect of their industrial application, is still largely unexplored. Herein, the possibility of combining eutectic solvents (ESs) with microwave assisted extraction (MAE) in the extraction of PACs from grape pomace (GP) is explored, aiming to improve not only the extraction yield but also the mean degree of polymerization (mDP). The combination of choline chloride with lactic acid was shown to be the most effective combination for PACs extraction yield (135 mg/g) and, despite the occurrence of some depolymerization, also enabled us to achieve the highest mDP (7.13). Additionally, the combination with MAE enabled the process to be completed in 3.56 min, resulting in a considerably reduced extraction time.

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) and ionic liquids (ILs), specifically natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), allow for the extraction of natural products using environmentally friendly solvents instead of organic solvents. Here we describe the extraction of anthocyanins from a medicinal plant using NADES prepared either by evaporating method or heating-and-stirring method with the help of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). The NADES extract can be qualified by the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method, which can separate the component of NADES with target compounds from medicinal plant.

The pretreatment with green deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is conducive to realizing the high-efficiency utilization of lignin at a low cost. In this study, an innovative choline chloride/urea/calcium hydroxide (ChCl/UR/Ca(OH)) DES containing a reversibly-soluble base Ca(OH) was developed for the pretreatment of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL). This paper reports a novel method for simultaneous extraction and in situ separation of flavonoids and alkaloids from mulberry leaves using a pH-responsive deep eutectic solvent (DES)/water system. Five novel DESs were synthesized, and isoquercitrin and deoxynojirimycin were respectively selected as the representative compounds of flavonoids and alkaloids to evaluate the extraction and separation efficiency. The optimal DES, namely [HexA (hexanoic acid)][MPD (2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol)], was identified, and the extraction and in situ separation conditions were optimized.

This study explores the impact of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) on the structure and functionality of treebean (Parkia timoriana) seed protein, a novel approach to enhancing protein stability and functionality for sustainable bioprocessing.
