Habits involve regular, cue-triggered routines. In a field experiment, we tested whether incentivizing exercise routines-paying participants each time they visit the gym within a planned, daily two-hour window-leads to more persistent exercise than offering flexible incentives-paying participants each day they visit the gym, regardless of timing. Routine incentives generated gym visits than flexible incentives, both during our intervention and after incentives were removed. Even among sub-groups that were experimentally induced to exercise at similar rates during our intervention, recipients of routine incentives exhibited a larger decrease in exercise after the intervention than recipients of flexible incentives.

Analyzing the habits of exercisers is crucial for developing targeted interventions that can effectively promote long-term physical activity behavior. While much of existing literature has focused on individual-level factors, there is a growing recognition of the importance of examining how broader determinants impact physical activity. In this study, we analyze large-scale human mobility data from over 20 million individuals to investigate how visits to various locations, such as cafes and restaurants, influence visits to fitness centers.

Put a bet on it: Can self-funded commitment contracts curb fitness procrastination?

J Health Econ

December 2024

Department of Economics, School of Economics and Management, Lund University, Scheelevägen 15B, 223 63, Lund, Sweden.

We investigate the use of a highly scalable intervention to help individuals achieve their physical activity goals: self-funded commitment contracts. Using a randomised experiment, we compare the effect of soft (non-incentivised) and hard (incentivised) contracts among 1629 members of a gym in Stockholm, Sweden. We find a significant positive impact of being offered a hard contract on monthly visits to the gym and the probability of meeting one's contract goal.

A Study of Hypertension and Fitness of Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Healthcare (Basel)

October 2024

Department of Exercise Rehabilitation, Gachon University, Seongnam 13120, Republic of Korea.

Individuals with spinal cord injuries have a higher incidence of chronic conditions such as hypertension and cardiovascular diseases due to a sedentary lifestyle and low levels of physical activity caused by their disability. Additionally, their physical fitness levels are lower compared to those without disabilities. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between hypertension and the fitness of individuals with spinal cord injuries in South Korea while considering differences across sexes and spinal cord injury levels.
