We report an improved method for the controlled solvent-phase decomposition of ferrocene into highly crystalline monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles at relatively low temperatures. Solution-phase decomposition of ferrocene into nanoparticles has received little attention in the literature, due to the percieved stability of ferrocene. However, we synthesised wüstite FeO-iron oxide core-shell nanoparticles by thermally decomposing ferrocene in 1-octadecene solvent and in the presence of oleic acid and oleylamine, as surfactants. We report procedures that provide cubic and spherical core-shell iron oxide nanoparticles whose size (29.3 ± 2.3 nm for spheres, 38.6 ± 6.9 nm for distorted cubes and 23.5 ± 2.4 nm for distorted cubes with concave faces) and shape can be controlled through simple adjustments to reaction parameters. Transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction analysis methods were used to characterise the nanoparticles.

Addition of two equivalents of NaSCNHBz to CuSO affords the yellow diamagnetic coordination polymer [Cu(SCNHBz)] (1), resulting from intramolecular electron-transfer and concomitant formation of the thiourea, (BzNH)CS. 1 reacts with PPh and 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) in CHCl to give monomeric [Cu(κ-SCNHBz)(PPh)] (2) and [Cu(κ-SCNHBz)(κ-dppf)] (3), respectively, both of which have been crystallographically characterised. While 1 is thermally stable in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) up to 70 °C, addition of BuNH to 1 leads to its rapid decomposition to afford CuS (covellite) nanomaterials; indeed in neat BuNH, covellite formation is rapid at room temperature.

Article Synopsis
  • The crystalline cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene fc(CPh-C-NMes) is highly reactive and unstable in solution due to its ability to insert into C-H bonds, a process that doesn't occur in the related compound fc(CPh-C-N-p-CH-tBu).
  • Although fc(CPh-C-N-p-CH-tBu) (1) cannot undergo the same insertion, it is too short-lived to isolate because it quickly rearranges to form a distinct cyclic enamine through an unusual decomposition process.
  • Trapping experiments with various reagents have led to the formation of stable compounds, indicating that 1 is an even stronger ambiphile than A, and both compounds do not react with

A BODIPY-Ferrocene Conjugate for the Combined Photodynamic Therapy and Chemodynamic Therapy with Improved Antitumor Efficiency.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) can destroy tumor cells by generating singlet oxygen (O) under light irradiation, which is limited by the hypoxia of the neoplastic tissue. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) can produce toxic hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) to eradicate tumor cells by catalytic decomposition of endogenous hydrogen peroxide (HO), the therapeutic effect of which is highly dependent on the concentration of HO. Herein, we propose a BODIPY-ferrocene conjugate with a balanced O and ⋅OH generation capacity, which can serve as a high-efficiency antitumor agent by combining PDT and CDT.

Recently, we have reported the influence of various reaction atmospheres on the solid-state reaction kinetics of ferrocene, where oxalic acid dihydrate was used as a coprecursor. In this light, present study discusses on the nature of decomposed materials of the solid-state reactions of ferrocene in O, air, and N atmospheres. The ambient and oxidative atmospheres caused the decomposition to yield pure hematite nanomaterials, whereas cementite nanomaterials along with α-Fe were obtained in N atmosphere.
